Layoff Rumors at Time Inc.; Lauer's New Deal

March 9, 2012
The New Republic has a new owner. Chris Hughes, who was Mark Zuckerberg's roommate at Harvard and helped found Facebook, steps up to purchase the money-losing but influential magazine. He will be editor-in-chief and publisher, with Richard Just staying on as editor. Hughes aims to bring TNR into the digital age by focusing on tablets. He has no real aspirations for making money, telling The New York Times, "Profit per se is not my motive. The reason I'm getting involved here is that I believe in the type of vigorous contextual journalism that we -- we in general as a society -- need... I'm investing and taking control of The New Republic because of my belief in its mission, not to make it the next Facebook."...

Time Inc. retains the services of Bain as a consultant, leading some insiders to whisper "layoffs." Additionally, Steve Sachs (executive VP of consumer marketing) and CMO Stephanie George head for the exits. Paul Caine is the big winner, taking over George's tasks and landing a position in the Office of the Chief Executive... Avenue, pillaged when Peter Davis, Julie Dannenberg and Cricket Burns departed to launch Scene, hires Randi Schatz as president and publisher. Jane Allon, wife of owner Tom, will edit with Michael Gross taking a job as real estate columnist... The Washington Post offered its open managing editor position to New York Times assistant management editor Richard Berke. He turned the WaPo down... Bill Frist lands a gig as a columnist at TheWeek.com... Salon poaches Willa Paskin from New York...

It looks like Matt Lauer will be staying with Today. The personality will reportedly be getting around $25 million a year, which would be an $8 million raise from his previous salary. Ryan Seacrest, rumored to be Lauer's replacement if he left, won't join the Peacock (not that he needs another job)... Longtime New York anchorwoman Sue Simmons is out at WNBC/Channel 4. ("Tossed overboard" in the parlance of Cindy Adams.) She has been with the channel since 1980 and is the highest-paid local anchorwoman in the country. Gawker honors her tenure with a ringtone... Nora Zimmett takes over as executive producer for CNN's weekend morning show...

AOL is firing some Patch sales people for "underperformance." Elsewhere, Eric van Miltenburg and Jason Shellen are out. They were SVP of business operations and head of AIM, respectively... Diet Coke taps Jean Paul Gaultier as creative director for some reason... And there are changes at Vanity Fair, The New York Times and more...
