WaPo Goes Local; Billboard's New Chief

Washington Post brass hire John Temple to fill the opening managing editor slot. The news leaked earlier in the week, with Dylan Byers nabbing the rumor and Jim Romenesko hearing the Honolulu Civil Beat editor and former head man at Rocky Mountain News accepted the position. Temple's hire could lead to an increasingly local flavor at the WaPo. He will also focus on the digital side, with executive editor Marcus Brauchli writing, "He'll help us to build on the rapid growth we've enjoyed recently with readers who come to us through our website, on mobile devices, or through new platforms like the incredibly successful Washington Post Social Reader on Facebook."...

Joe Levy takes the top spot at Billboard. He previously worked as editor of Maxim and Blender but says he will continue to focus on Billboard's trade roots despite his consumer mag background. Levy is lucky he got out of Maxim when he did, as nearly half the edit, photo and Web teams lost their jobs. Six of the 13 full-time staffers working in those departments are out, including senior editor Seth Porges. Blame the layoffs on the Internet, which made paying for Maxim's format unnecessary...

The Hollywood Reporter promotes Georg Szalai to international business editor. He had been based on the East Coast as New York bureau chief. According to a memo sent by editorial director Janice Min, "In his new role, he'll expand The Reporter's reach as the global market becomes increasingly important to Hollywood and the entertainment industry overall." In other words, drinks on Georg... Men's Health bumps up Randi Siegel from fashion and retail director to executive fashion director... Reuters brings on Anatole Kaletsky as columnist. He jumps from The Times of London, his home for the past 20 years... Angela Bronner Helm is the new editor-in-chief at Uptown, moving up from the managing editor position...

Zynga loses Neil Roseman, VP of engineering, just 15 months after he started with the company. He plans to do "something entrepreneurial."... undergoes massive layoffs, including its entire Main Street staff... And there are changes at AOL, Bravo Digital Media and more...
