Former Gawker Editor Rebounds; Derbyshire Out

April 10, 2012
Ex-Gawker editor-in-chief Remy Stern lands at the New York Post where he'll assist Jesse Angelo in remaking the overlooked website. "Remy will help shape the Post's overall digital strategy going forward and work on the site day-to-day," a spokeswoman tells Capital NY. Stern lost his Gawker gig when Nick Denton replaced him with A.J. Daulerio in November. Stern had taken over the top job at Gawker after Denton purchased his Cityfile. Best of luck to everyone involved, of course...

John Derbyshire is out as contributor to National Review. The publication ends its affiliation with him after he wrote a racist column for another website. In a statement regarding the incident, NR editor Rich Lowry said the "column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation."... The Hollywood Reporter promotes legal columnist Eriq Gardner to senior editor. The move is a result of NY-based George Szalai decamping to London for a spot as international business editor... Details hires two staffers. Sheila Monaghan and Greg Emmanuel are senior editor and articles editor, respectively... New York gives Jessica Pressler a monthly column about money... Fast Company grabs the New York Daily News' Anjali Mullany as social media editor... Elizabeth Spiers hires another bright young thing, nabbing HD Made's Kelly Faircloth for the growing (and always solid) Betabeat. She will cover (what else?) the NYC tech scene... Bill Simmons and his Grantland crew make another smart hire, getting Bryan Curtis to join them full time...

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offers buyouts to an unknown number of employees. "It’s possible this is just an attempt to clear some other departments of people who are reaching retirement age," Local 51 Newspaper Guild president Tom Silverstein writes in a memo to his union charges... Betty Nguyen leaves CBS News. She joined two years ago after a stint at CNN... Martha Stewart is negotiating a new contract...

Stop us if you've heard this one: Startup founder lays off staff due to money woes, then frantically hires them back before massive sale to huge company. That's what OMGPOP's CEO Dan Porter did when Zynga came calling with $210 million. Stay classy, Mr. Porter... And there are changes at Condé Nast, XO Group and more...
