AOL Splits Into Three; Curry's Seat Taken

June 29, 2012

AOL transforms itself, reorganizing into three separate business branches: Membership, Brand Group, and Advertising.com Group. CFO Artie Minson gets bumped up to chief operating officer, overseeing the whole shebang. There is no word yet about who will replace the elevated executive. The move is one that Tim Armstrong hopes will help kickstart the business. The CEO recently won a fight with investor group Starboard Value for control of the board, but he needs to show results quickly to keep the momentum going. Minson, who has been taking on more responsibility in recent months, is clearly the man Armstrong thinks can succeed...

Vice hires Cat Marnell, the writer/drugger who recently left xoJane. She'll pen a column called Amphetamine Logic. The move is, of course, all too logical... Cristina Cuomo takes over as editor-in-chief of Manhattan. She had been in the same position at Plum Hamptons... James Aguiar leaves the stylist world for a gig as national fashion director at Modern Luxury... Kirsten Rohrs Schmitt moves to W as research chief, leaving her assistant research editor position at Reader's Digest... Frank DiGiacomo says goodbye to New York Daily News' "Gatecrasher" for a spot heading editorial operations at Movieline... Glenn Hall joins The Blaze as managing editor. He previously has been editor-in-chief of TheStreet... Slate recruits Smithsonian's Laura Helmuth as science editor and Will Oremus as a tech blogger...

NBC makes Ann Curry's replacement official. Savannah Guthrie, who's been the program's 9am co-host since June of 2011, took the seat this morning on her debut show... Greg Kelly, son of NYPD Commissioner Ray, trades the morning shift for the night one, jumping into the nightly news anchor chair at WNYW. Dave Price fills his spot at Good Day New York. Ernie Anastos and Harry Martin lose airtime as a result of the moves... Ed O'Keefe leaves ABC News Digital for the editor-in-chief position at the forthcoming and super-secret news site backed by Lerer Ventures...

Bob Mansfield is retiring from Apple. During his 13 years with the company, he oversaw hardware engineering on everything from the Mac to the iPad. He'll be missed, but he's no doubt a very rich man... Facebook hires 17-year-old "mobile genius" Nive Jayasekar. She'll be a partner engineer intern before matriculating at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall... Research in Motion will lay off 5,000 and delay the launch of Blackberry 10 until the first quarter of 2013, which has some analysts calling for the death of RIM (well, the latest death of RIM)... Karen Griffith Gryga moves to Dreamlit Ventures as a managing director of the Philadelphia office. She had been CEO at FashInvest... And there are changes at Los Angeles Times, THR.com and more...
