In rather shocking fashion, Jonah Lehrer resigns from The New Yorker. His fall -- well, the second part of the narrative that began with "self-plagiarism" accusations, anyway -- started after Michael Moynihan posted a story on Tablet detailing fabricated quotes in Lehrer's book, Imagine: How Creativity Works. (Here's an excellent Q&A with Moynihan about his process for those really interested in this tale.) Lehrer denied and lied before finally coming clean and walking away from the NYer post he started just a few months ago. Lehrer made multiple mistakes and then compounded them. Apparently, summer is the season for layoffs. The Daily will tell staffers today of its plans to fire 50 of its 170 employees. According to AllThingsD, the editorial and sports pages at Rupert Murdoch's struggling tablet newspaper will be hit the hardest... CQ Roll Call laid off 30 staffers, including three from the editorial side, just this morning. FishbowlDC reports that HR informed employees one at a time a la Up in the Air... Buzzmedia lets go a third of Spin's staff just two weeks after purchasing the publication. Among those out: editor-in-chief Steve Kandell and managing editor Catherine Davis. The next question is what happens to the print magazine... The "smaller, more focused" Media General gives 75 people the boot... The St. Louis Post-Dispatch cuts 23 staffers from a number of different departments. Hopefully there won't be more, but you never know in this world of plummeting revenue...
