Layoffs at Zynga; Problems at Penske

June 4, 2013
The rapid rise of Zynga is officially over as the company parts ways with 18 percent of its workforce -- 520 staffers -- and shutters its offices in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas. The company, which laid off a number of staffers in the fall, is desperate to cut costs because the Web business is falling off dramatically and the mobile division can't match the lost revenue. Kara Swisher, who broke the news, calls the combination "a perfect storm of trouble." There's some hope, however, as a hold 'em poker game is popular and could turn into a big business, especially in the U.K...

Nikki Finke may (or may not) be leaving Deadline Hollywood, the blog she founded and then sold to Penske Media in 2009. Details are sketchy, but TheWrap's Sharon Waxman -- Finke's friend-turned-foe -- gleefully reports that Jay Penske fired Finke after the notoriously difficult and aggressive writer crossed one too many lines. Penske's team, of course, says it's not true. Some outlets are reporting that the writer/muckraker/truthsayer has an out in her contract and that she is unhappy that Penske never gave her a role at Variety. Finke would like it all to just go away. Whatever the truth is, it's going to make a great story when it comes out fully. (Check out Kate Arthur's excellent post for background on everything.)...

"Susan's mission here is to add vitality and impact to Politico's daily report by marshaling the best outside contributors to produce analysis, argument and first-person perspectives on the news of the day," editor-in-chief John Harris and executive editor Jim VandeHei wrote in a memo announcing the news... Alessandra Galloni takes over as Southern Europe bureau chief at Reuters. She joins from The Wall Street Journal and will also serve as enterprise editor-at-large... Kim Murphy steps into the role of national editor at the Los Angeles Times. She replaces Roger Smith, who is retiring...

Lee Cordobés is Cooking Light's new associate publisher, moving up from integrated director, eastern division... The meteoric ascent of Zach Baron continues as he joins GQ as a staff writer... Justin Green jumps from The Daily Beast to the Washington Examiner... Is Wolf Blitzer looking at a reduced role at CNN? And is the reason behind the decision his lack of good looks? Double ouch... TMZ parts ways with Johnny Lopez, the only man other than Harvey Levin to land a byline... And there are changes at Marie Claire, TheBlaze and more...
