Microsoft plans to cut 18,000 jobs, roughly 14 percent of its workforce, as it realigns its sales, marketing and engineering teams. (The company announced the news with a "hilariously bad" memo.) Many of the layoffs come from the Nokia business it acquired in April. According to CEO Satya Nadella, most of the people who are losing their jobs will be notified in the next six months. That's not exactly the most reassuring thing in the world...

Who said newspapers were dying? Newsday taps Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Matt Davies. "Matt's razor-sharp pen will skewer the powerful and provoke the complacent," Newsday editorial pages editor Rita Ciolli said in a statement. "He's a singular talent in the cartooning world and we're delighted to welcome him as a colleague."... The New York Times recruits Ernesto Londoño for its editorial board. He had been at the Washington Post... The Associated Press moves Michael Weissenstein to Havana, where he'll take over as bureau chief. He had been stationed in Mexico City and will be joined by Christopher Gillette, who will head the outfit's television operations in Cuba...

Fusion, the news channel collaboration between ABC News and Univision, bulks up on bookers, recruiting Andrea Amiel as senior editorial producer, Tracie Fiss as consultant and Rebecca Dorfman as director of planning... Lauren Skowronski is leaving MSNBC, where she had been vice president of media relations, for a job with the parent company, NBC Universal. She takes over as vice president of corporate communications... Alisyn Camerota, Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon might be getting a new vehicle on CNN called The 10 o'clock Show... Entertainment Tonight's Rob Marciano moves to ABC News. He'll be senior meteorologist, returning to his roots... BBC News will cut more than 400 jobs as it looks to trim the budget. The company says it will create almost 200 positions on its digital side...

Natalie Kitroeff moves to BusinessWeek. The woman who was Nicholas Kristof's assistant will cover business schools... The New Republic lands Chris Gardner as a staff writer. He had been working at MSN... Marie Claire signs up Glamour managing editor Nancy Gillen in the same position. She previously worked at Hearst's Harper's Bazaar... Gawker recruits former New York Times editor Leah Finnegan as senior editor. According to Gawker editor-in-chief Max Read, she "has a good Instagram account and hates the right people." The site also gives Aleksander Chan a full-time writer job... Carolyn Davis is the new managing editor at Bonnie Fuller's HollywoodLife celebrity news site. Emily Longeretta jumps from senior reporter to news editor there... Randi Zuckerberg lands a SiriusXM radio show because of course she does... And there are changes at ABC News, McCann and more...
