Fareed Zakaria Joins The Atlantic; BuzzFeed Fires Benny Johnson

Fareed Zakaria joins The Atlantic as contributing editor. He will also produce content for Quartz, the company's business site, as well as continuing as a columnist for the Washington Post and a host at CNN. The former editor of International Newsweek, two years removed from a plagiarism scandal at Timewill participate in Quartz's conference, The Next Billion: A Connected World, in November. "This is one of those wonderful high-water marks in The Atlantic’s 157 year history," David Bradley, Atlantic Media’s chairman and owner, said in a statement. "Our founders (Emerson, Holmes, Longfellow...) would welcome Fareed enthusiastically -- and then worry about raising their own game."...

Benny Johnson is out at BuzzFeed after editors uncovered multiple examples of plagiarism in his work. "We found 41 instances of sentences or phrases copied, word for word, from other sites, many of them inappropriate sources in the first place," editor-in-chief Ben Smith wrote in a memo explaining the decision... Self lays off eight staffers. That makes 25 departures on the editorial side since Joyce Chang took over as editor-in-chief in April. She has hired eight employees, including fashion market and accessories director Dania Ortiz, who had been fashion director at Michael Kors... Rodale ups Paul Collins to associate publisher of Runner's World and Running Times. He's been with the company since 2006, spending the last four years as ad director for the two publications... Brennan Carley joins Spin as assistant editor... Stefan Becket leaves New York for Mic, where he'll be politics editor...

The Wall Street Journal recruits Joe Flint, who says goodbye to the Los Angeles Times, where he had been since 2009. Flint worked at the WSJ between 1999 and 2006, and will remain based on the West Coast... The New York Times moves Elizabeth Harris to the Metro section, while switching Al Baker from public education to the Queens beat. Additionally, Kia Gregory and Matt Flegenheimer get new gigs focused on Manhattan and City Hall, respectively... The Hill moves Bob Cusack from managing editor to editor-in-chief. Ian Swanson takes over Cusack's old role, while Dustin Weaver replaces the new ME. Hugo Gurdon leaves for The Examiner...

CNN switches Jon Auerbach to executive producer of Reliable Sources. The former WCBS managing editor had been supervising producer on John King, USA... Ad Age promotes marketing editor Natalie Zmuda to deputy managing editor and hires Karen Edelman as senior editor of event content and Malika Toure as reporter... Roger Pielke Jr. moves from FiveThirtyEight to SportingIntelligence... And there are changes at Better Homes and Gardens, Hearst Magazines Digital Media and more...
