Background: Back in the 80s, rap music was a fledgling niche confined mostly to small clubs, block parties and dorm rooms in New York -- nothing like the cultural phenomenon and trendsetting standard it is today. In 1988, The Source magazine was launched to pay homage to the growing genre, quickly becoming the authoritative "source" on all things hip-hop. "It was something that was a little different, because there were a lot of fan 'zines back then, but there wasn't anything that dug a little deeper into hip-hop as a culture," said Kim Osorio, the magazine's editor-in-chief. "It wasn't just about the popularity of the music, but also the ideals behind the community that created this genre, this music that was born out of struggle. And that's what The Source was."
