It may be summertime, but the living ain't been easy so far for serfs working for the big media conglomerates. Bertelsmann finally cut bait on Gruner + Jahr (reducing the staff of Fast Company, still twisting in the wind, to woe-is-us postings on the magazine's blog), while Viacom has decided to split itself in two, leading some to wonder whether Simon & Schuster will be jettisoned as just some no-growth hunk of non-synergistic nostalgia. And if HarperCollins or some other publisher were to buy it, would the staff stay intact? The media cognoscenti are muttering sagely ...
