How To Pitch: San Francisco

You don't have to live in the Bay Area, but your pitch needs to resonate with readers who do

- July 25, 2013
Circulation: 75,000 with a readership of 300,000
Special issues: September has a special section on fashion, October is about travel, November has a holiday theme, and December is the "power" issue.

Background: The magazine got its start in 1955 as a TV programming guide published by public broadcasting station KQED. After a few name changes and new owners, it was re-branded San Francisco in 1997. Now owned by city lifestyle publisher Modern Luxury, San Francisco installed Jon Steinberg, an ASME winner for his work at New York magazine, as editor-in-chief in February 2012, and he says the big-picture mission remains the same: "It's big-city journalism on a number of levels. We have in-depth feature reporting on civic issues, social justice, politics and personalities in power positions. Then, we cover the service side: how to live the good life in a vibrant, exciting, constantly changing city. Then there's our food, style and cultural coverage."
