Background: Texas Monthly was launched in 1973 as a general interest magazine covering the state of Texas, publishing stories about politics and public policy, crime, entertainment, food, history, business, travel and more. The magazine's founding publisher, Michael R. Levy, retired in 2008. Since 1998, the mag has been owned by parent company Emmis Communications. There have been just four editors in Texas Monthly's history: William Broyles (1973-1980), Greg Curtis (1980-2001), Evan Smith (2001-2009) and Jake Silverstein (2009-present). And, as the state has evolved, so has the magazine's mission: For natives, Texas Monthly functions as a reminder of what once was, a record of their proud heritage. For transplants, the magazine is part textbook and part guidebook, a journalistic road map of the state, its history and its people.
