Can Valeria Latona get Shape in shape?

Shape magazine found its new editor hiding in the beauty closet after American Media's editorial director (and de facto Star editor) Bonnie Fuller offered the job to everyone in town and found no takers. The lucky (and probably slightly mortified) winner is Valerie Latona, Shape's beauty editor for the last five years. Not coincidentally, she's one of the few employees based in New York (the rest are in Los Angeles), which no doubt provided invaluable opportunities for managing up. Her new number two is Denise Brodey, a former deputy editor at Glamour...

Hearst is shutting down its stand-alone custom publishing operation and folding it within the company's integrated sales and marketing division instead. Publisher Michael Hurley is leaving and at least a few layoffs are expected...

Not that we needed to remind you, but: Whatever you do, don't apply to work at The Source. The former editor-in-chief is suing, claiming sexual harassment; two employees are still facing attempted murder charges; management has stopped saying how many people actually read the magazine; and now it seems the company has defaulted on a $20 million loan...

AmNewYork has a new editor-in-chief, and, as expected, she's a Tribune employee. Previous editor Alex Storozynski quit in June under duress after Tribune execs at Newsday tried to frame him for an ethical breach. He has since publicly claimed that Tribune would attempt to take control of the free daily newspaper (it's an investor), and it doesn't hurt his argument that new editor Vera Haller hails from NYNewsday.com.

Associate publisher Steve Weinstein is leaving New York Press, and his position leaves with him. The company called the elimination part of its "ongoing cost-reduction program." What's left to reduce? Maybe printing the paper...

There were more hires and departures this week at Sirius Satellite Radio, American Media, Bloomberg News, the Los Angeles Business Journal, Clarkson Potter, Maletzky Media, and New York Spaces...
