Background: California Lawyer, originally a publication of the state bar, was bought by the Daily Journal Corporation in 1981. Aimed at -- you guessed it -- California lawyers, the pub covers one of the most talked-about legal markets with analysis, in-depth features, technology updates and practical advice. "We cover groundbreaking cases, compelling controversies and fascinating personalities, and, as a monthly magazine, we seek to go beyond the headlines of the day with lively writing and in-depth reporting," said managing editor Chuleenan Svetvilas.
"In terms of depth and breadth of coverage, ours is the only legal magazine of its kind," said Svetvilas. Although the mag has several thousand subscribers from out of state as well, everything the pub touches has to have a California connection. It may cover more nationally-oriented stories, like Supreme Court cases, but the mag always ties it back to its home state and looks at what the decision means for lawyers in California. Bottom line? To land a byline here, it indeed helps to be based in California, but you don’t necessarily have to live in the Golden State to pitch.
