It's tempting to read more -- much, much more -- into the mass defections
from Gawker last weekend, especially the idea that their departure (and publisher Nick Denton
's defiant stance
that the site is about to become much, much more commercial) heralds the moment when even "outsider" bloggers become just another mass medium churning out page views to generate advertising inventory. After all, the pay-per-traffic model that appears to be at the heart of the three editors' abrupt departure is the culmination of a trend that staffers at first-generation content sites like Salon
once muttered ...
