Serve up hyperlocal features and neighborhood dish to get on this NY food mag's radar

Background: Edible Queens is a member of Edible Communities Publications, a group of nearly 60 franchised print magazines that "celebrate local foods, season by season." Though the national network connects Edible Queens to sibling pubs Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn, the magazine is an independent business. Run by former Prevention editor Leah McLaughlin, who now serves as EQ's editor-in-chief and publisher, the New York City foodie book launched in September 2009 and publishes seasonally. "There are a lot of sources of basic listing information in Queens, but there's no publication that tells the back of the house story on the local food artisans, farmers, shopkeepers, wine shops and chefs," said McLaughlin.

Geared toward Queens denizens and frequent visitors, the magazine attracts "smart, savvy" readers with a strong connection to their community. "[Our reader] often cooks at home and shops locally. She's probably on a first-name basis with the owner of the local Greek restaurant and visits the same coffee shop every morning. These are people who love where they live and consider the shopkeepers down the street part of their family," said McLaughlin. "Queens is a collection of proud and independent communities, and we're fiercely local." Citing "tremendous changes" and new residents in the bustling borough's neighborhoods, McLaughlin "aims to preserve the strong community ties that already exist and loop in the newcomers by introducing them to the incredible people who live [in Queens]."...
