Get On The Air: WCAU NBC 10 Philadelphia

On-camera energy and enterprising multimedia use will help you break in at this station

Background: This NBC affiliate offers a combination of local Philadelphia news, national news and breaking news as well themed programming. WCAU prides itself on being responsive to stories important to viewers offering "news you can use" in programs that cover consumer issues, health and entertainment. Those who complain that the media emphasizes the negative take note: WCAU has a program devoted to inspirational news, aptly named, The Good News Is.

Such programming is all a push toward making WCAU's shows "more relevant and user-friendly," says news vice president Chris Blackman. Part of that strategy includes embracing new media. "We think of ourselves less as broadcasters and more as 'content-casters,'" he says. In terms of more traditional reporting, Blackman says the station, unlike others in the country, has not scaled back on investigative reporting....
