Fox News Scoops Juan Williams; Investment Group Eyes Boston Globe

October 22, 2010
This whole Juan Williams thing is getting absurd, isn't it? NPR fired the pundit for comments he made about Muslims on Bill O'Reilly's show. Or did he get cut (as he should have) for appearing on Fox News? Regardless, he almost immediately landed a gig with the network where he made his comments and appeared on Fox and Friends to defend himself. At least one person thinks this isn't the best career choice...

A Boston-based investment group wants to buy the Boston Globe, Boston.com, and the Worchester Telegram & Gazette. Trust 2100 is led by entrepreneur Aaron Kushner who brought together more than a dozen investors. The play: "To raise enough money to make it attractive to the Times Co. and invest significantly in New England's largest newspaper, starting with the newsroom." The Globe, etc. has been the target of acquisition rumors for more than a year. Brass at the New York Times Co. refused comment, but they must be pleased that NYT stock jumped at the news...

Add Terry McDonell's name to the list of people who won't be taking the top job at Newsweek. The New York Post reports that he'll stay at Sports Illustrated and continue working on Time Inc.'s digital initiatives. Sidney Harman has spoken with a dozen editors about the gig but continues to strike out. (Newsweek's Tumblr takes matters into its own hands.) The former president of the magazine is in the digital world, while Jon Meacham, the newsweekly's previous editor, joins Random House as executive vice president and executive editor. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, published by the house... Jody Quon is out at W after just three issues. Stefano Tonchi will not replace her... James Marcus joins Harper's Magazine as deputy editor... Self promotes Yung Moon to associate publisher...

Peter Kreisky steps into a senior advisor role at Time Inc. He'll work to improve the company's digital offerings... Gus Johnson, beloved play-by-play man, leaves MSG Network. Executives didn't like that he kept missing games for obligations at CBS and Showtime. Mike Crispino is expected to replace Johnson... Cenk Uygur joins MSNBC as a contributor... And there are changes at Little, Brown, GolinHarris, Amazon.com, and more...
