New York vs. New York Times Magazine; Facebook vs. Google

December 21, 2010
Hugo Lindgren is giving The New York Times Magazine a serious makeover. He poaches from Adam Moss, once again, grabbing New York editor-at-large and Approval Matrix guru Adam Sternbergh as culture editor. Additionally, NYT Mag deputy editor Alex Star departs for a position in the newspaper's Book Review section. The move is at least in part a response to Lindgren's recruitment of former New York Mag staffer Lauren Kern to be deputy editor. This Moss-Lindgren fight will only get more interesting...

Kate Reardon replaces Catherine Ostler as editor-in-chief of U.K. fashion publication Tatler. The new EIC has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair for the past 11 years, but served as fashion editor and fashion director of Tatler in the '90s... Architectural Record editor-in-chief Robert Ivy steps down to take over as CEO of American Institute of Architects... Editor & Publisher promotes Adam Tessin to technology director. The publication's new owner MediaSpan plans to extend the archives while it limits the paywall...

At long last, Oprah Winfrey's OWN network will launch January 1. It's the biggest cable debut in more than a decade and its success or failure will say a great deal about the future of television... Tavis Smiley takes his PBS show from Los Angeles station KCET-TV to Larry King has some secret Internet project in the works as well as a radio thing with (of course) Ryan Seacrest... Nancy Harmeyer replaces Jon Brady as Los Angeles bureau chief at Fox News Channel. Brady decamped for Seattle in August... Thomas Roberts joins MSNBC fulltime... Stephen A. Smith ends his radio show because he has some bigger projects in the works...

Facebook snags another Googler as researcher Paul Adams leaves for Mark Zuckerberg's empire. Adams is a social media whiz, and his departure is one more signal that Google might be in trouble... Bonnier app maven Sara Ohrvall returns to Sweden after two years in the United States. She will continue to oversee digital progress as SVP of research and development... Did you know there's a Groupon academy for writers? J-schools better watch out...

The Andy Warhol Museum lands an interim director in Eric Shiner. He replaces Tom Sokolowski who shocked everyone who cared with his surprise retirement announcement... And there are changes at USA TODAY, Eli and Edythe Broad Museum, and more...
