Engadget Team Leaves AOL; Tina Brown Poaches Another WaPo Staffer

Joshua Topolsky takes his Engadget team to SB Nation. He's leaving the confines of AOL, where the tech blog never quite fit. Topolsky's reasoning: "SB Nation believes in real, independent journalism and the potential for new media to serve as an answer and antidote to big publishing houses and SEO spam -- a point we couldn't be more aligned on." Jim Bankoff, who runs SB Nation, previously served as executive vice president at AOL where he helped build TMZ. Nilay Patel, Paul Miller, Joanna Stern, Ross Miller, Chris Ziegler, Justin Glow and Dan Chilton, all vets of the site, will join Topolsky. (PaidContent wonderfully writes that SB Nation won the tech publishing fantasy draft.) It sounds as though Tim Stevens, Engadget's automotive editor, will take over the top spot at the decimated AOL property, which is already restaffing...

And another one joins NewsBeast from The Washington Post. Lois Romano moves over to Tina Brown's bullpen, where she'll hang out with fellow WaPo alums Howard Kurtz, Robin Givhan and Blake Gopnik... Diane Oshin gets promoted to group publisher of All You and Cooking Light, while Suzanne Quint succeeds her as All You publisher... Vice Media lands a huge influx of cash. The news is inspiring, in a sort of terrifying way...

The Guardian names Janine Gibson head of the New York-based digital venture scheduled to kick off later this year. She is currently the editor of The site's news editor, Stuart Millar, will move to Gotham and serve as Gibson's deputy... Emily Smith of "Page Six" recruits Ian Mohr as her No. 2. He previously worked at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter...

The latest in the Katie Couric saga: She plans to leave the anchor chair and launch a syndicated talk show, which, let's be honest, isn't really new news at all. She does go to Iraq on a reporting trip, maybe to get far away from Rush Limbaugh who claims she "destroyed" Evening News. Elsewhere at CBS News, Jeff Greenfield departs from his gig as senior political correspondent... NBCUniversal hires Valari Dobson Staab as president of local media and promotes John Wallace to president, media works...

AOL fires some of its freelancers but not all of them. Others will be transitioned to full-time employees. Additionally, Erik Davis -- EIC of Cinematical and writer and editor for AOL Moviefone -- steps down... Facebook apparently fires corporate development manager Michael Brown for conducting the private marketplace equivalent of insider trading... Google loses Jonathan Rosenberg, senior vice president of product management. He's the first big loss of the Larry Page era, which started this week... Dan Abrams taps Amy Tennery as managing editor of Mogulite... And there are changes at Shift Communications, GolinHarris and more...
