HP's CEO Rumors Are True; GQ Gets Down To Business

September 23, 2011
Leo Apotheker is out as CEO of HP. In his place: Meg Whitman. (Apparently those rumors weren't a joke.) The former eBayer and unsuccessful California gubernatorial candidate has her hands full saving the company that has more than 320,000 employees. The board picked her. The question is whether they met with her. They didn't before hiring Apotheker, who replaced Mark Hurd. (An anonymous board member says they were so worn down by all the infighting.) If nothing else, it will be interesting watching this Titanic try to avoid the icebergs...

Chris Mitchell remakes GQ's business side. The new publisher recruits Alice McKown, Jenny Glassberg and Janice Trichon from Condé Nast Traveler while elevating Brendan Monaghan. Finance director Meredith Golden leaves... Ladies' Home Journal publisher Julie Pinkwater leaves after seven years. She's the latest departure from the Meredith stables... Erin Hobday lands a promotion at Self. She moves from features and projects director to managing editor. Her predecessor, Kate Lewis, is now senior executive director of human resources at Condé Nast...

Jason Odell, the man who created the CNN holograms, moves to Current TV. He'll be executive vice president of technology where he'll keep an eye on IT, Web engineering and broadcast engineering. It will be interesting to see what he creates. He won't have the same budget he had at CNN, but you can imagine Current will be willing to take chances... Emilio Romano takes the top spot at Telemundo. He replaces Don Browne, who retired over the summer. Ramon Escobar also leaves the network... Patrick Paolini is SVP of station sales at Fox. He starts October 3... The New York Post taps Geoff Earle as Washington bureau chief...

The Huffington Post snags Emily Peck as its managing editor for money and finance. She had been the management and careers editor at The Wall Street Journal... Viacom lays off a number of staffers in the music group... Patch is still in chaos as director of sales Scott Colontonio quits. He follows AOL SVP Mike DeLuca out the door... Kathy Johnson, president of the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications, resigns... Amazon hires The Believer editor Ed Park to help with its publishing unit... And there are changes at National Journal, CQ Roll Call and more...
