The Times' Digital Head Steps Down; Conde Goes Hollywood

November 8, 2011
Martin Nisenholtz leaves The New York Times after 17 years. The head of digital strategy is retiring after making the site one of the most robust newspaper websites in the world. He successfully oversaw the implementation of the metered wall earlier this year and helped create a new revenue stream. He will not be replaced, but Times CEO Janet Robinson will handle the majority of his duties...

Conde Nast continues its push to Hollywood. Dawn Ostroff, the head of CN's entertainment division, is opening an office in Los Angeles to pitch script ideas to studios. She plans to hire between six and 10 staffers to handle the duties. In the meantime, a few Conde editors will be showing up on the ABC show Jane by Design...

ABC News hires Kelly Cobiella and Bazi Kanani. The former will work from the company's London offices while the latter will be a correspondent in Nairobi. ABC also recruits Ginger Zee and Paula Faris to join the New York office. Zee is expected to be on Good Morning America Weekend this Saturday... The Early Show reshuffles "a small number of employees."...

The Hollywood Reporter grabs former Angeleno senior editor Gary Baum as staff reporter. Andy Lewis joins as well in a staff writer role... DailyCandy snags former MTVer SuChin Pak... Politico makes some changes to its blogs, as Ben Smith's expands to the media beat. Dylan Byers, recently poached from Adweek, will write some stories as will Emily Schultheis...

Howard T. Owens is the new president of National Geographic Channels U.S. He had been head of Reveille until he stepped down five months ago. He will, presumably, help redirect Nat Geo towards a little bit more commercial flavor... Edward Breen removes himself from the board of Comcast, citing his company Tyco's plans to split and a possible "appearance of conflict" between his duties... Viacom names Kassie Canter executive vice president of communications for the entertainment group. She had been chief communications officer at Oxygen Media... Sharon Waxman hires Stacey Farish as publisher. She joins from the Los Angeles Times where she was vice president for media entertainment...
