Time For A New Head; Conde Pushing Publishers

December 2, 2011
Time Inc. finds a new head: Digitas CEO Laura Lang will take over the top spot in January. She has no publishing experience, but Time Warner liked her brass ability to market the brands. She also scored points for being much more level headed than her predecessor Jack Griffin, who was let go in part because of his repeated clashes with other top executives. AdAge reports that "She uses her iPad, iPhone, and Android and Blackberry smartphones regularly and interchangeably." Lang spent the last 12 years at Digitas...

Another big move in the executive ranks: Tom Glocer steps down as CEO of Thomson Reuters. James C. Smith, chief operating officer for all of two months, will take over the top spot. Glocer failed to engineer a recovery, a task that now falls to the 25-year veteran of Thomson... John Hillkirk steps down as editor-in-chief at USA Today. He will remain onboard as a senior editor for investigative journalism and national enterprise reporting. Executive editor Susan Weiss will oversee things while a committee searches for a new EIC. Folks in the comments section of the Gannett Blog list plenty of potential replacements. Meanwhile, Lee Horwich is also named deputy content editor... National Journal grabs Jill Lawrence as managing editor for politics. She had been at The Daily Beast and TheAtlantic.com...

Details taps Kevin Martinez as publisher. He had been a consultant there since leaving Elle. Elsewhere at Conde Nast, Jason Wagenheim takes over the publishing post at Teen Vogue, ousting Sabine Feldmann... Sally Preston lands at Real Simple as publisher just one month after leaving her job as group publisher of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia... Gersh Kuntzman walks away from his editor-in-chief job at The Brooklyn Paper for a job at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism...

Arlo White takes over the play-by-play duties for NBC Sports' Major League Soccer and US National Team games. Elsewhere in the football world, Taylor Twellman and Alexi Lalas will handle the analyst gigs for soccer coverage at ESPN. (The best duo in the business, if you ask us.)... Terence Noonan replaces Lisa Morin as executive producer at Anderson... Rick Haskins scores a promotion at CW, moving up to executive vice president, marketing and digital programs... Bill Galvin moves to CNN International as SVP of business development and sports programming, leaving his job as senior vice president of HLN. Katherine Green replaces him, while Mike McCarthy moves into her SVP of programming at CNNI job... SB Nation adds Bomani Jones and Matt Ufford to its growing roster of talent... And there are changes at Bloomberg Television, Details and more...
