CNN Gets An Early Start; Mashable's Latest Scoop

January 3, 2012
The New Year begins much as the last one ended: without much movement on the jobs front. The biggest news of the day is the debut of CNN's new morning. Asheligh Banfield and Zoraida Sambolin handled the Early Start duties while Soledad O'Brien followed up with Starting Point. Will 2012 be the year CNN finds its mojo again? Eh, we hope so for the sake of all the good people working there, but probably not. Then again, you never know what's going to happen in an election year. The new morning line up could be a start (and the willingness to shake things up is another positive)...

Sarah Maslin Nir ends her "Nocturnalist" column at The New York Times. She had been on the nightlife beat for the past two years but will take her talents to covering Queens... Vince Dimiceli takes over the paper and Ben Muessig returns from the Huffington Post... Canyon Ranch poaches Jenny Sucov to be an editor. She had been vice president, editorial, at Everyday Health... Harlequin promotes Sarah Pelz to senior editor of its nonfiction offerings...

Mashable hires Peter Pachal as tech analyst. The move further confirms Pete Cashmore's desire to be all things to all people. Best of luck with that, buddy. Pachal had been news director at PCMag... SoundCloud raises a $50 million round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and adds Mary Meeker to its board. Elsewhere in board moves, Kliener Perkins' Chi-Hua Chien joins Klout's and founder Jason Goldberg gets on RJMetrics'... Walter Sabo is out as chief operating officer at Merlin Media. He lasted less than eight months at the start up... And there are changes at RIM, Reuters and more...
