Marissa Mayer has killed telecommuting at Yahoo! while she continues to make changes as the company's new CEO. It's likely that telecommuting itself isn't the problem, rather how the policy is managed, mismanaged or not managed at all. This speaks to larger problems that are probably quicker to identify and fix when everyone's working in one place. Same goes for Best Buy's decision to end Results Only Work Environment (ROWE), its work-when-you-want program.
However, some critics of these bans cite gender bias. They claim flexible work policies help women balance careers and raise children. So, could companies that lack flexible work policies really be focused on hiring more men than women? Perhaps, but if companies have a tough time recruiting women for specific jobs, it could also be due to another issue. According to one study, wording of job descriptions could determine how appealing jobs are to women.
This could be why companies struggle attracting female candidates for many male-dominated jobs like engineering. Because, obviously, the only thing standing between a woman with an engineering degree and an engineering job is a posting with words like ambitious, confident and analytical, right? Hmm. Wonder what Marissa Mayer's job description looks like...
Yahoo! Announces End to Telecommuting (USA Today)
