How To Pitch: Real Simple

Send a stellar pitch on work or family to earn a byline in this guide to organizing your life.

Background: There are some women who seem to have it all together. Their homes are spotless, their kids go to school in freshly pressed uniforms, they have monthly freezer cooking sessions so they're never worried about dinner at 5:30 p.m. and -- as if to pour salt in the wounds of the rest of us who are just scraping to get by -- they make it all look easy. As it turns out, though, these Stepfords on steroids weren't born clutching monthly planners and color-coded to-do lists. They likely just read Real Simple.

"We are a lifestyle magazine that makes life easier in every aspect of women's lives," says deputy editor Danielle Claro of the Time Inc. publication. "We're known for [helping readers with] organizing, cleaning, fashion and health, and we have a really strong food department." In short, Real Simple has existed for the past 15 years to help women at least look like they've got it all together.

Certainly, there are other publications that profess to being all things to all women, covering the gamut of lifestyle topics (Claro says O, The Oprah Magazine is Real Simple's closest competitor), but none are as down to earth and approachable. "We're really solution-oriented; we're problem solving; we're practical," Claro says. "But we're also fun and entertaining."
