A pair of small publishers turned over at the top this week, perhaps underscoring the difficult climate they're facing and the pressing need for new ideas. The Atlantic Monthly, which all of a sudden has a "consumer division" when you group the magazine with the all-Harvard-all-the-time 02138, hired Justin Smith as president. Smith, who helped launch the U.S. edition of Felix Dennis' The Week back in 2001, declared in interviews that his job was to make the magazine profitable, and that his job was now done. (Barely, we're sure.) Business director Steven Kotok has succeeded ...
