KCBS Celebrates Centennial
Today marks the 100th anniversary for KCBS radio, which in 1909 offered what's believed to be the first regularly scheduled broadcasts in the country. It was operated in San Jose by Charles David "Doc" Herrold and his students at Herrold's College of Wireless and Engineering, and was known popularly as "San Jose calling." The station was purchased by CBS in 1949, whereupon it was moved to San Francisco and given the call letters it still has today. It switched to an all-news format in 1968. KCBS came full circle in 2006, when, along with KPIX-TV, it moved its San Jose news bureau to the building at First and San Fernando streets from which Herrold sent his initial broadcasts. The station will commemorate the event by broadcasting its noon news from First and San Fernando, with San Jose mayor Chuck Reed on hand. CBS has put together an interactive timeline examining the station's history. Previously |
