| gemstone | Posted 10/26/2004 5:14:34 PM | show profile hi, I recently applied for a copywriting position with a major media organization in NY. I was asked to include my salary requirements. I put down mid to upper 40s to keep me in the running for the job. My background is more writer/journalist, but in addition to the copywriting aspect there are other responsibilities that would allow me to utilize a variety of my skills. My question: What is a reasonable salary to expect for such a position in NY? ...Also, after reading a recent post on this site regarding salaries I now know to be vague and say something like ''negotiable.'' Thanks to anyone who can offer any help on this topic. |
| jmm | Posted 10/26/2004 11:57:07 PM | show profile I'm not copywriter, but I'd say that is low. Is it catalog, corporate, advertising etc. That affects salaries. adverstising is high paid. mass market advertising, good to remember, pays gobs of money. I always thought copywriters make way more than journos. Also, I do agree with putting ''negotiable'' unless they require it, then researching like crazy to figure out what it might pay. Hope a copywriter will post. |
| pob | Posted 10/27/2004 1:31:51 PM | show profile I work with copywriters. I'd say even without a solid copywriting background, in the New York market, at a ''major media organization,'' you'd be looking for about 75K. If it's an agency (or equivalent) doing advertising or corporate work, as the last poster mentioned, 75K would be more at low end, but probably about right as a starting point for negotiations since you don't have experience. The creative directors I know would be hesitant to hire someone who asked for so much less, as it's a clear sign that you don't have experience in advertising. But good luck to you. If you post more details about the job, we may be able to tell you if the salary you asked for is in the right range. |
| gemstone | Posted 11/1/2004 1:07:13 PM | show profile MORE ON copywriting salaries Thank you both for posting. Without being too specific the company is a TV/Mag content combo. So, particularly from the TV end I know they generate excellent revenue and have a proven track record. A friend reccommended that I put mid to upper 40s, which I did. so as the second individual wrote I probably priced myself out of even being on the short list. ...Ah, but live and learn from the wisdom of others on the mediabistro bulletin board. Thanks for your responses. |
| joeinphiladelphia | Posted 11/2/2004 1:03:59 AM | show profile Copywriting salaries are all over the place, from the 30s to 100K plus. A lot depends on your experience and the requirements of the job (if you’re a proven direct mail copywriter you can make a mint; if you’re grinding out relatively unimportant copy for a schlock operation, they may pay peanuts). Based on what you said, $60K is the minimum I would ask for. |
| CumbersomePsyche | Posted 11/2/2004 11:08:23 AM | show profile I think you went way low. I left a copywriting job about fifteen years ago when I was in my mid-twenties (yeah, I hate to admit my age, but there we go) and I was making $60,000. Since then I've never been paid that much in editorial jobs. Granted the world has changed in the last decade or so, but I don't think that copywriter wages could possibly be much lower than that. |
