Hi everyone,

I'm new to mediabistro.com, and new to looking for an internship. I am in Las Vegas, Nevada for school but I am originally from New York, and I am looking for a summer internship at a magazine. I have no contacts that are even close to this type of internship, so I am in a bit of a rut. I have a few email addresses & such that I've acquired from searching the internet, but I'm pretty much at a dead end. I could really use some pointers, or some help getting in the front door. I would appreciate ANYTHING or any type of advice anyone here could give me. Thanks and good luck to all of you!

You're going to want to get the ball rolling and apply ASAP, since most summer internship deadlines are coming up (usually somewhere btwn Feb 15 & March 1) Try going to the internships page at JournalismJobs.com

Check out ed2010.com, and get on their email list. you should really have started to apply during november or before, but keep checking ed2010 emails and u will see a bunch coming up. APPLY EVERYWHERE, just call up the magazine you want to work for, (check for information online first), ask who does the hiring for interns for whatever department you want to work in, and send them a resume, cover letter, clips and make a follow up call in two weeks. Stay really positive, it takes a lot of patience, but if you really want it, you will get it. Good luck!
*Also search for prior posts on this website for internships, you will come across a lot of detailed information about internships, cover letters, resumes, etc.

Janine-- word of advice: when you say you're 'finishing up your cover letter' I hope you don't plan on sending the same basic form letter to everyone. You should have a different cover letter for each job! You need to make sure you understand the tone and voice of each publication. It's ok if you have very similar letters if you're applying for say, two teen mags (assuming it's the same department) but you should STILL customize it -- throw in some details that are specific to ONLY that publication.

Also: while everyone is right that you're going to be tight for getting things in to major internships, lots of smaller places don't even start looking until later, so don't panic -- just be resourceful. Contact editors, writers, publications you admire and see if ANYBODY could use some help. Might not get you paying gigs, but it's not a bad way to try. (Also, look on craigslist.org. Not sure if you're interested in book publishing or not, but they frequently have literary agency spots.)

itsc2 -

thanks for the great advice. i'm not sending the same cover letter out for each one, i just want to have a basic one down that i can work off of for other cover letters. plus, a little extra practice wouldn't hurt. again, thanks!
