Topic: New launches--your opinions?

| _Sally | Posted 6/6/2005 7:21:37 PM | show profile What do you think of some of the new magazines that have launched? I'll start: For Me magazine--I can't help but notice how behind the times this magazine feels. The target audience may not be NYC dwellers, but it's still aimed at 20 and 30 something women. Pieces on the ''hot'' new trends of mojitos, knitting, and that tingler head massager? Heh? Plus the product placement in the edit is pretty gratuitous. Hopefully they'll pick it up with future issues. Chow magazine--LOVE this one! The writing is snappy, and it's pretty well-organized for a startup (poor layout/organization is my usual complaint when it comes to new launches). I'm looking forward to seeing more from them. |
| minoric | Posted 6/6/2005 8:22:37 PM | show profile | email poster Love Chow magazine as well, but the photos aren't so hot. The food doesn't look appealing at all...which is a problem for a food magazine. The hipster/moody lighting doesn't work well on mac 'n cheese. Did they put out a second issue yet? I'm a subscriber and have only received one.... ------ www.clareiswriting.com |
| kh | Posted 6/6/2005 9:57:00 PM | show profile rescue magazine i recently got a hold of rescue magazine, an issue from late last year, i think. there were hardly any ads, however! lots of in-house ads, though. |
| kh | Posted 6/6/2005 9:57:41 PM | show profile domino i love, love, love domino. do others? unfortunately, there are few bylines as it's a shopping magazine and so i don't see opportunities for freelancers. |
| belinda | Posted 6/6/2005 11:18:35 PM | show profile New York Dog -- I laugh myself silly over it. |
| apresguilt | Posted 6/6/2005 11:31:03 PM | show profile Radar I don't care if Radar IS a confused, rehashed version of Spy (see Kurt Anderson's haughty critique of it in last week's New York Magazine)-- I think the content is unusual and often hilarious. (The $88 Damien Hirst knock-off? Brilliant.) Besides, I was in grade school when Spy called it quits, so I don't mind if some of the pieces are updated, reimagined versions of old Spy articles. |
| VillageGal | Posted 6/7/2005 8:35:41 AM | show profile Radar Maybe I'm biased because I wrote for SPY but Radar seems like such a lame imitation. I was disappointed by the recent reissue. |
| lenagrove | Posted 6/7/2005 9:30:25 AM | show profile I rather like FOR ME. Yes, I had long since heard of the knitting craze and the tingler head massager, but I didn't pay that much attention to that particular piece. Overall, the magazine's got a fun sort of tone that I like, plus some really good articles. I just picked up the newest one yesterday, and there is a great essay by a 190-pound woman whose fat boyfriend dumped her because he thought she was too fat! I liked reading about the double standard there and also how the writer put the experience into perspective. It's a quick, easy, entertaining read. I think the magazine is pretty enjoyable. |
| clark | Posted 6/7/2005 9:36:08 AM | show profile Chow I have never even heard of Chow until yesterday when I got a rejection letter to a blind art direction want ad. (they wanted someone local). Well in 2 years of unemployment and an estimated 5 thousand job applications, I have only received about 5 rejection letters. So I was HUGELY impressed with them! |
| studiolab911 | Posted 6/9/2005 11:07:10 AM | show profile new launch=new name I picked up For Me at the airport, because it was only $1.25. I thought the name was terrible, but it could develop into a promising magazine if goes with the young, professional, yet creative girl on a budget theme. Haven't see Chow- where can I find a copy? |
| minoric | Posted 6/9/2005 1:13:11 PM | show profile | email poster Chow - Still in biz? This thread reminded me that I paid for a one-year subscription to Chow, and haven't received anything since I got their premiere issue 6 months ago. I noticed on their website that they do have a new issue out, so I emailed their subscriptions dept. (there's no number listed). No response. Has anyone received the new issue? Thanks, CK ------ www.clareiswriting.com |
| sthrn | Posted 6/9/2005 6:26:42 PM | show profile yep, Chow 2 is out I just got my second issue in the mail this week. It's a big improvement over the first issue content-wise. (And I liked the first issue, too.) The photos though... |
| lise2177 | Posted 6/9/2005 7:43:59 PM | show profile i also agree that name For Me is awful, but i appreciate the concept: the young professional ''everywoman,'' who lives on a real budget. i've been waiting for a magazine to realize even the girls who adore jimmy choos cant afford them, and that even $150 for a pair of shoes isnt a ''steal''. its better than $500, sure, but a true steal is $50 or $75-- and a magazine that does a round up of hot summer sandals for that price is speaking my language. and i DO live in NYC-- i just can't drop half my paycheck on my footwear, much as i wish i could. so it's onto something, but there's a ways to go. like, where are the ads? it seems to be all content, which is actually kinda weird. it exhausts your eyes to read it. and the name leaves much to be desired...very uncreative. |
| lise2177 | Posted 6/9/2005 7:46:50 PM | show profile forgot to add that i love domino! so many sources for products, gorgeous design, tons of decorating ideas... sure, very little to actually read, but you knew that already, since its a lucky-sibling. i cant wait for the next issue! |
