The situation: After dating long-distance for six months (but knowing each other for 12 years) my boyfriend decided it was worth it to him to move down to the city from upstate to be closer to me and invest in our relationship. This is awesome.

He has previously worked for his father's business, in contracting and stone but also ran a freelance IT business on the side for the past few years, being extremely well-versed in all things computers. He is looking for a job in either IT or admin. As yet he's had no luck. This is not so awesome.

The temp agencies tell him he is overqualified, due to his proficiency in so many programs. The FT positions seem to have eluded him...perhaps because he has limited office experience or perhaps because he never finished school (RIT)? I'm not sure...

cont...

I know it may be hard to offer advice without seeing his resume, and it's unlikely that you would pass along a lede without knowing him personally, but I have always found this forum to be helpful to me so I thought I'd ask...

Any advice on how he can market himself better? Any ledes on IT or admin jobs, or a resource for those types of positions?

I would appreciate anything!

get a job
Tell your boyfriend to find a headhunter or a web site such as this one in his industry, IT/adm. There must be such a site. You can look at a library resource list such as an encyclopedia of associations index, and find a wealth of web sites under his specialty.
hope this helps

My company hires many midlevel contracters in IT/programing positions. We've had great luck with agencies like Robert Half and have brought quite a few folks in a permanent hires. Make sure your BF is targeting the right organizations and searching through the right websites. For IT jobs, I've heard many success stories from craigslist and dice.com.

here's a small caveat: i'm here in SF so the market may be different than NYC.
