I know we are wondering what is really in the white room - and why it cost so damn much for membership. Does anyone know anything about it? What are the benefits, membership processs? Or has anyone been there? It is suposed to be for the media types - but how can we afford it?

SOHO House et al
I met someone recently who is trying with all their might to be a member of SH. It's supposedly the newest place where all the movers and shakers like to drink and socialize.

Whether or not it's a good thing to throw down a large chunk of change in the hopes that someone (whom you don't know) is going to want to talk business with you and not their cronies on their downtime is (probably) another subject.

I've read that they've had problems acquiring members etc.,

But they do have a rooftop pool and I'm sure you can have a swingin' time there.

A Blast...
Gang -- not to be impolite, but SH is a blast, a blast -- full of all my pals in media, mostly in their 30's and 40's... a really fun place, particularly at the pool at sunset.

Sort of like Michael's, but with excessive cocktails, and you can smoke! Seriously -- a great place to run into everyone you know, and meet new, nice people. I also like the fact that you have to be at a certain "level" in your career to join... so it is not just celebutants, and kids. A really fun, friendly place.

How can one afford it? Well -- it IS tax deductible...

certain employers let employees charge dues to their expense accounts.

What is the process to join? Can anyone who pays join, or is there a selection process, and interview, what?
Anyone know. And how much does it cost to join?

Oh never mind. It's not such a mystery. Their website has all the info. $900/year plus $200 application fee.
Application goes before a committee. Etc. Etc.
could be fun just to try and apply and see what happens I suppose.

how to get in?
like anything else in nyc -- it helps to know people! If I were joining (and I am), I would enclose a resume, and perhaps a copy of any books you have written. It is very media friendly, with a few cool bankers, wall street guys to offset the artistes. Was just there last night -- a fun crowd.

As someone who works mostly from home, fun to have a place to go.

Yes. It does seem that if your application is supported by existing members you have a better chance of getting accepted. And of course, any books you've written or impressive schools attended and jobs held will help -- that goes w/out saying. It's kind of like joining a suburban country club: Usually you have to be sponsored by a member and then "they" check you and your family out from head to toe, inside out, etc. Job, schools your kids go to, hobbies, sports, any family scandals?
Soho House certainly does sound like a fun place. But unfortunately it's going to be out of reach for a lot of creative, intelligent, amusing people. But I guess they can always finagle an invite from a member.

This is NY, man! If you want to bask in the glory of riches and fame, just hang out in the right bars. If it's for networking, I'd love to hear if anyone has networked back the $1,100 price tag. That would be interesting to hear about. My take is that the SoHo House is targeting the rich and famous for a place were they won't be harassed by the unwashed masses. For the hangers-on, it's a place to feel, well, rich and famous. Nothign wrong with that, but it cheapens the experience when you have to pay to do it like a ride a Disneyland. (And the decor of that Zebra room is horrid. I thought black and white "moderism" went out of style with Steely Dan.)
