I recently finished a few freelance-writing assignments--one on decor, the other on fashion. Once these are published, I’d like to pitch new-product and trends pieces on these topics, as well as others on beauty, health and fitness, and women’s issues. What’s the best way to go about getting on press lists? Are there other resources beyond press lists? Should I just approach individual companies in these industries as a freelancer, or is there an easier way? (I’d prefer not to go through the editors I’m already working with, as I largely intend to pitch these stories elsewhere.) Thanks in advance for your help!

Work the phones
I'd simply get in touch with the PR people from the companies you want to keep tabs on and ask to be on their media list. You don't necessarily need to be on staff somewhere to get this information and all you really will need to do is tell them that you are a writer who covers their industry.

It's also a good idea to attend industry trade shows (especially if they're held in Las Vegas, which is affordable even when the rates are jacked up for big conventions)--this is often one-stop shopping for both meeting PR contacts and for scoping out new products. And getting your name on the "press attendee list" for a trade show virtually guarantees you'll be sent product info on a regular basis from manufacturers who use such lists to augment their own contacts. You may also get a chance to meet trade- and consumer mag editors who are also in attendance and possibly have the chance to hustle future assignments.

On a related note (and I apologise if this is obvious to everyone but me)how should a small company go about getting the names of freelancers who specialize in writing about their particular market? Are trade show press-lists the way to go also? A biotech company I work with would like to send their new product PR's to freelance science writers in addition to newspapers and magazines. Is there an easier way to get the names of science writers besides just reading numerous publications and attempting to track them down, one by one? Thanks so much.

The trade show/conference press list is surely a good way to go. Another would be to find an association of science writers (there's got to be one out there) and use their member list. Still another would be to try and obtain a list of entrants from an annual science/technology-writing competition. I'm sure a quick Internet search could yield results here.

Organizations for writers do not just let people "use" their member lists. Those lists are confidential, and not be used for commercial purposes.

However, if you were to send a note to the president or publicity chairperson of one of those clubs, and asked for them to put a notice into their next member newsletter, I'll bet they'd do it. That way, you'll hear from people who are truly interested, not by spamming a bunch people needlessly.

Good luck!
