I have a question: I am based out of Vancouver (Canada, sorry) and I'm very interested in getting a position of some sort at a US-based media outlet.

In terms of my experience, I have quite a bit of online writing for fairly big publications, and print with local papers - which includes feature and cover stories. I also have some editorial experience. In addition I have experience in PR and ran successful campaigns for a number of clients and have done quite a bit of writing, including interviewing for web content for a TV show etc. I am in the midst of a university degree in communications.

So I'm wondering, with my experience and my lack of an American citizenship, what are my options?

PS. The type of writing that I have done (and would like to do) is in entertainment, specifically film writing -- and more specifically interviewing and film reviewing.

First, don't apologize for being Canadian! (I'm a former west-coaster, now living in Ottawa.)

If you want a full-time position in the states, it can be difficult. You'll need a visa and from what I hear those aren't the easiest things to come by. If an American company can sponsor your visa then it's fine, but with the current market, they are more likely to find an American candidate with similar credentials than to hire someone who needs a visa and needs to move.

However, there's no reason why you can't freelance to American pubs. (I asked the board this question a few months ago, so part of this advice is regurgitated from those posts.) When I lived in BC, the film industry there was thriving - is it still now? There could be plenty of opportunity for you to pitch stories about films and such going in in Vancouver.

(I remember speaking to my aunt in Kamloops last year. J.Lo [forgive me for saying ''J.Lo''] was in town shooting a movie, and I doubt many NYC or LA people went to Kamloops to do anything with it.)

And who knows, maybe after writing a story or two for an American pub while living in Canada could open many more doors for you.

Good luck!

Thanks...
Thanks a lot Julie! Do you know if my being a student may ease things a bit as far as getting a job in NY/LA goes?

I do have a bit of US-based experience - and you are completely on the ball in terms of major films being shot here in Vancouver... How do you think I could go about pitching ''set visits'' and the like to US-publications. Cause obviously to get access I need to be writing the story for a specific publication already... Any advice?
