| kylesec | Posted 1/16/2004 10:23:36 AM | show profile Anybody else seriously disgusted by the story in Thursday's Daily News about Univision's ''Primer Impacto'' and how the sexy newscasters draw viewers with their scanty outfits, even attracting a large male audience who don't even understand spanish? They just watch the show so they can jerk off...The story quotes female newscaster Carmen Dominicci as saying ''if we were ugly would you watch the show?'' |
| kylesec | Posted 1/16/2004 10:30:55 AM | show profile now I'm not naive. I know there's a reason Katie Couric wears short skirts and high heels three days a week, but at least she will act as if she's trying to be a real journalist. Primer Impacto had one woman wearing an outfit you would see in a ''Cinemax after dark'' movie. This is the news. The woman is talking about terrorist attacks while looking like she could give a lapdance. It bugs me because, obviously this concept doesn't take journalism even the least bit seriously. |
| Writingarticles | Posted 1/16/2004 11:07:36 AM | show profile Have you ever actually watched that channel? Sex is the main thing on it. Sexy outfits, extremely flirty game shows. Oh and VERY bad acting. Most of the hispanics I know don't even watch it. |
| CrazyDaisy | Posted 1/16/2004 11:09:57 AM | show profile Disgusting, but... How is that different from local English language networks, which cover diet fads, stripper workouts and shopping malls as if they were international breaking stories, just to get ratings? With the exception of a few shows, I don't think any TV outlet in the country takes journalism seriously. Whether the bait they use is a skimpy dress or sensationalism and fear-mongering I don't think makes a difference. |
| kylesec | Posted 1/16/2004 11:56:16 AM | show profile Believe me I do know that most news programs often insert a juicy and salacious element. However, the journalists, the true news people are generally dismayed by that sort of thing. And what truly bugs me is the slap in the face of it all; the way the Primer Impacto folks don't care about the news and are baldfaced about it. Same kind of crap goes on at Fox News, where they don't even try to hide their agenda. |
| dispatcher_from_TOAD | Posted 1/16/2004 12:23:23 PM | show profile Not ''seriously disgusted.'' A rack of US magazine covers can invoke the same feeling that media sells women. If Couric was twice as talented as a journalist but physically unattractive and obese, she wouldn't be as rich and famous as she is today. Latin culture is terribly sexist, unfortunately, but I just laugh at stuff like that. Who cares? It's friggin' television. People who watch a lot of teevee are morons. What do you expect? All television news sucks, so were just talking about the degree of sucky-ness and sexism. Have you see the topless news anchors on that Russian television network? |
| PRmagnet | Posted 1/16/2004 12:30:53 PM | show profile | email poster I am Latina and African-American Being multi-cultural and having grown up in the US all of my life, I find it all quite amusing. In the mainstream world of broadcast news, everyone is so serious and high-brow (code word for professional) and the majority of newscasters are white, with the token asian, hispanic, and african-american thrown in for color. The reality in U.S. broadcast news is that it is extremely competitive behind the scenes. The advent of an increasingly competitive and global environment, has led to a ''all gloves off competitiveness.'' This has resulted in reality TV shows, entertainment news programs (which I love), and more salacious news and behavior by otherwise professional journalist trying to keep the ratings up and lock their jobs down. Bottom line, being hot and sexy has always been an integral part of Hispanic culture and now it is being used (and some would say abused), as a highly effective financial commodity to network executives. ------ PRmagnet |
| Editor1 | Posted 1/16/2004 12:34:50 PM | show profile Natural order of things Lowest-common-denominator is what rules the world. Get on board or get left behind. Our forefathers knew that majority rule wasn't the way to go. People are idiots. If you give them what they want, you end up with stupid ideas like universal healthcare and naked newscasters. Heck, those morons in California elected a lusty bodybuilder as governor. Did you hear that? As governor! Hah hah hah!!! Let's face it. Sex sells because people want to buy. And when people want to buy, someone will line up to sell. I too, am saddened by their cheap tactics. But considering 99% of the news these days is packaged like a bad reality TV show (read: OJ Simpson, the septuplets, anything else)...I don't see mainstream media as doing much better. Got to go - gotta get my news fix and get my freak on. Thankfully, I can do it in one sitting. ''I think he knows what Rome is. Rome is the mob. Conger magic for them and they'll be distracted.'' - Gracchus, from The Gladiator ''I've said it before and I'll say it again: Democracy simply does not work.'' - Kent Brockman, The Simpsons. |
| flyingblind | Posted 1/16/2004 2:26:29 PM | show profile I never took local television newscasts too seriously anyways so it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. TV is all spectacle. Why should anybody expect more? Sexing up newscasts isn't limited to Latin television. In Los Angeles, there are a few stations that put their anchors behind podiums instead of desks. And the women wear short skirts so you can see their legs. They even advertise it like morning news shows, which has never been a bastion of real journalism either. |
| setrec | Posted 1/16/2004 5:52:46 PM | show profile didn't read the daily news story but i watch univision occasionally and, fwiw, primer impacto is not the main news program (or at least it didn't used to be). the main news program (noticiero univision) was pretty much indistinguishable in presentation from american nightly news shows (though, of course, somewhat different in the stories it covered). primer impacto, when i watched it, was basically tabloid tv (think ''a current affair,'' for those that remember that program). |
| upcoaster | Posted 1/20/2004 1:53:14 PM | show profile Not exactly a new tactic Why single out poor Univision and some ratings-chasing local outlets? They're just being up front about it. Really the single most remarkable thing about Univision programming is the amount of time -- in its telenovelas -- that it features lovely women in tears. Their mascara never runs. There are websites devoted to the ''newsbabes'' (and weather announcers) appearing all across cable (yes, especially Fox), and the reviews ain't about journalism. Laurie Dhue's lips could have their own show. So could Brigitte Quinn's legs. (Not that I've noticed.) Who watches TV for real news? |
| CrazyDaisy | Posted 1/20/2004 3:35:20 PM | show profile And in the way of eye candy for the girls, there's Andy Cooper on CNN, or whatever his name is. |
| kylesec | Posted 1/20/2004 11:26:05 PM | show profile yeah, but... look i already conceded the point that katie Couric is pretty and there are a bunch of other newscasters who get ahead because of their good looks. However, like Fox news (which gets a lot of flack, Al Franken has made a career of knocking them), the Primer Impacto mindset is obvious and unashamed. Yes, Anne Curry may interview Sheila Kelley about strip-aerobics, one day, but then she can ask Wesley Clark a decent series of questions without looking like carmen electra at mardi gras. While its true that we do give attractive newscasters the better gigs, that's not to say that they're not serious journalists. |
| stevenbarnes1941 | Posted 1/21/2004 4:03:54 PM | show profile You know I replied to a thread a few weeks ago about how boring this board had become. Looked over a couple of posts today and read this one. The line about the scantily clad newswomen being like ''Carmen Electra at Mardi Gras'' line made me laugh out loud. Kylesec, I tip my hat... |
| ingenue | Posted 1/23/2004 12:06:33 PM | show profile Most Hispanics ...who are not native spanish speakers do not watch Primer Impacto for their daily news fix. Even if you understand what is being said, it is still laking in real-news show content and feel. The old host made any routine story sound like a groundbreaking event. Even the Chupacabra was a life-altering story. It was funny to watch even if you are channel-surfing. I am not sure about today's reporters. As to the issue of using sex to hawk the news, it is obvious that the major channels hire pretty folk to serve up today's headlines. Honestly, would you like to watch someone day in and day out whose is unappealing? News is usually unpleasant -- shooting, murders, tax increases, war, etc. At least if you add pretty faces it makes the news easier to swallow. Or is it that all well qualified broadcast journalists happen to physically attractive? Is it a self-selecting evolutionary process that draws these attractive newscasters? Hardly. I guess the mantra is, if we hire newscasters are hot, then you will watch... Of course, this is not to say that they are not also deserving of an opportunity on their own merits. I am sure they are smart, credentialed...etc. By the way, Couric looks better these days. She always gets the shoes right. New do, too. I think the outfits on the Univision shows are TACKY and tasteless. Bad boob jobs everywhere. The latin channels believe tv is still entertainment. The main news broadcasts which are much like any other news show. |
