I was told by a writer friend about a free service that lets you search for copies of your writing online.

I tried it - www.copyscape.com - and found that someone had totally ripped-off parts of my work, word for word. Needless to say, I am more than a bit furious.

The site had some steps I can follow to have the copycat content removed. Does anyone on the forum have any experience with this kind of thing, or advice on how to proceed?

Your help is very much appreciated,

It depends on the nature of the infringement. If it's a commercial operation, then you make sure that you've registered your copyright and then send a registered letter telling them to stop, along with an invoice for the use. Use can also use the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 to contact the ISP and demand removal of the page with the material. For both of those, go to www.copyright.gov, and spend some time reading about the copyright.

Then there are people who steal material for less ''commercial'' reasons. I once found a university student who had cited one of my artices in a paper, but who, when I looked (because I was curious about being cited) found that he had taken entire paragraphs, maybe with a word or two changed, and dropped them into his paper. For that case, I looked up the name of the dean and forwarded the complaint. The took action pretty quickly.

That copyscape.com site is absolutely worthless. It's basically a Google-type search engine with some parameters changed that really don't change the results much. The thread introduction is a poor attempt at marketing a bad product.
