| mo.st | Posted 10/24/2005 4:49:07 PM | show profile At 25, I've done pretty well for myself in the Advertising business but would love to get into Magazine work. I just found out about a receptionist opening at a Magazine and have given them my resume. If offered the job, is there any point in taking it? Will it lead to a better position at either that magazine or another in the future? In other words: hypothetically, would someone at Marie Claire be willing to hire someone for an EA position who was a receptionist at Wired? |

| Beautygirl | Posted 10/27/2005 7:18:13 PM | show profile I know at least two editors who started as receptionists. The one I worked was always looking for ways to help out the editors when she had a free moment. She was also super pleasant and everyone just thought she was great. After about a year and a half or so an assistant position opened and they were happy to give her a shot. She has since moved up the ladder quite a few times. So it can happen. Good luck! |
| catlondon | Posted 10/27/2005 7:55:17 PM | show profile When I was at a large video production company, staffing the tape library (I date myself) and reception was one of my jobs. Both were entry level and the good ones were poached by other departments in about six months. Frustrating for me (since the bad ones seemed happy to linger forever) but very good for them. Offer to help whenever you can, but do the mundane tasks really well, too. You'll get noticed. |
| mag_girl | Posted 10/27/2005 9:41:48 PM | show profile i started as a receptionist at a magazine and now i'm an editor. the most important thing is a foot in the door so i took it. from the beginning, i made it clear that i was ready and willing to help out wherever...and they utilized me. a job opened and i was promoted within six months. **but make sure you express that willingness and interest...and make sure the publication you are at is willing to let you take on additional projects. if you're just up there signing for packages and answering the phone without doing anything else, i can't see what would make them want to promote you. |
