| ilovelucy | Posted 2/2/2006 11:16:07 AM | show profile Hi - Can anyone tell me how to find the names of agents who regularly work with humor projects? That is, if they actually exist... Thanks! |
| thebizwiz | Posted 2/2/2006 11:25:25 AM | show profile how about agents with biz connects, too? can everybody also share the names of agents who work with the business sections in publishing houses! |
| ilovelucy | Posted 2/2/2006 11:35:49 AM | show profile bizwiz...Please use your OWN post! I checked and saw that you're new, but so am I, and yet I had enough sense to create a new one. |
| activeverb | Posted 2/2/2006 12:02:49 PM | show profile Most libraries have a guide to agents, written by Michael something or other, that says what they specialze in. Depends what you mean by ''projects.'' Scripts are their own kettle of fish. A lot of agents will handle humor books if they think they can sell it. |
| bezva1ps | Posted 2/2/2006 12:31:50 PM | show profile There are much better guides on the web for free than any of the junk in print for money. Jeff Hermans guide is notoriously overrated and chock full of skumdawgs. My suggestion is two-fold. Find a website called ''Everyone who is anyone'' they have names and email for just about everybody. Second: get onto the Publishers lunch subscription list. Their basic subscription is free. Every week they put out a ''Lunch Weekly'' which has twenty or thirty deal with names of agents, authors, and publishers and often an indication of the size of the deal. After a couple weeks of looking at it, you should get a very good idea who is handling the humor action. Good luck! Also check out the Writersnet lit agents board. It won't tell you what deals are happening, but it will give you a good basic free education on your end of the publishing biz |
| foodlit | Posted 2/2/2006 1:10:31 PM | show profile Here's a free agent resource www.agentquery.com WritersNet is ok, but it's mostly beginning writers asking basic questions, not getting into the depth of agent info that you are looking for. Best bet, is to join publishersmarketplace. It's only $20 a month, and you can join for one month only if you want...and you can search their deals database, so you can search on humor and see deals that sold, and what agents sold them. Also, what kind of humor are you talking about? If it's just humorous fiction, well that's a matter of voice, and the majority of agents will work. For instance, Jennifer Crusie is a funny writer, who is a NYTImes bestseller, and is represented by Meg Ruley of Rotrosen...so she'd be a great one to try. If it's non-fiction humor, then that is more specialized, and you can easily find someone with a track record by searching pubmktplace. Good luck, Pam |
| ilovelucy | Posted 2/2/2006 5:17:47 PM | show profile Thanks for all of your help! I've already been on both agentquery and Publisher's Marketplace! |
| Village Gal | Posted 2/3/2006 7:59:42 AM | show profile If you know about these sites, ( which are good) why are you posting here? I might be cranky about this becaue I just spent an entire month working almost fulltime pitching agents (with good responses). It's a lot of work and there are no short cuts. good luck. ------ Metaphors be with you. |
| ilovelucy | Posted 2/3/2006 8:21:46 AM | show profile Yes, you're cranky... ...and assigning a different meaning to my reply. I was basically saying: ''thanks! you just told me about the sites today and I've already headed your advice just a few hours later!'' I mean, really, I hate to be a smart behind, but I'm tired of all the cranky folk on this site. Take a vaca. To those of you who helped, thanks again. |
| ilovelucy | Posted 2/3/2006 9:00:24 AM | show profile *heeded* |
| Village Gal | Posted 2/3/2006 4:49:16 PM | show profile Actually, Lucy, if you were around here longer, you might realize I'm one of the most helpful posters on this site. As for your suggestion, taking a vacation is not an option. ------ Metaphors be with you. |
| clairezulkey | Posted 2/3/2006 4:58:36 PM | show profile | email poster Lucy, Greenberg & Assoc works with people like Neal Pollack, the Onion, Chuck Klosterman.... ------ Editor of MBToolBox |
