| LAgal | Posted 2/3/2006 12:46:35 PM | show profile Anyone know what a reasonable rate is for Web site freelancing? I know they are probably all over the place depending on the site, but does anyone know what the average rate is? |
| activeverb | Posted 2/3/2006 1:29:49 PM | show profile Well, start with the premise that the typical rate for a top freelancer is $1 a word and $2 a word for a national consumer magazine. Now, I know all magazines don't pay that much, but we have to start with some gauge. In my experience, comparable web sites will pay 25-50% less. But it really is all over the place, with no real average fee. |
| writergal | Posted 2/3/2006 1:40:31 PM | show profile Hope this helps I freelanced for a year or so ago for the Ladies Home Journal website and they paid 50 cents/word. So about half their regular magazine rate. Maybe corporate work pays better? |
| activeverb | Posted 2/3/2006 2:41:50 PM | show profile I think the print addition pays better for this. I did a lot of writing for the LHJ about eight years ago and back then they were paying $2 a word ($4000 for a 2K word piece) and I know in some cases they went higher. <<Posted ? 2/3/2006 1:40:31 PM | show profile Hope this helps I freelanced for a year or so ago for the Ladies Home Journal website and they paid 50 cents/word. | Tarra Bytes | Posted 2/3/2006 3:17:10 PM | show profile Depends I don't ever charge per word on corporate Web sites. Why? 1. You'll have to do many drafts. 2. It's not how many words you write, but how impactful they are. 3. The words do not have the same ''sale'' value as those in print and online publications. 4. It's a different audience than magazine readers; there is a different purpose for the copy. I charge one lump sum for writing an entire corporate site. The sum includes two revision drafts. Depending on how many pages I'm writing and how big the company is, I charge between $500 to $7,000 per site. I've charged $500 for local restaurants and $7,000 for financial brokerage firms (that was a pain to write...lots of tech garble). |
| globetrotter78 | Posted 2/3/2006 3:49:52 PM | show profile I'd like to write for websites but can never find writer's guidelines for sites like Orbiz.com. Anyone know where to find them? I've searched all over the site. |
