I posted on the Writers Weekly forum area. The post was a link to something I thought might be beneficial to others and had no commercial or personal benefit. For my pains, I've been banned permanently. The note I got accused me of posting ''garbage'' and was completely over-the-top, cruel.

Decent, well-meaning posters make mistakes on the forums I run as well, I try to judge on a case-by-case basis. I usually rmove the post and inform the poster that if s/he does it again, s/he may will be banned. Most apologize and don't do it again. Pornographers and obviously commercial spammers do get the immediate boot---but I'm not one of them! Angela Hoy from Writer's Weekly is the one who wrote that obnxious note and she knows (of me). This is no way to treat a colleague.

How do others feel about this type of situation?

I would have to know the nature of what the link was to, specifically. You may have accidentally pasted in a link to child porn or something? What was it

I believe that you could have amended the situation without naming the moderator, if it was as harmless as you claim. You're the one who posted a bad link, yet Angela is no 'allaboutadvice' when it comes to thoughtful moderating. Must've been some screw-up to get lifebant. Pissing anonymously is what you're doing. Go Angela.

The post was a writers contest. The prize was worth over $750. I don't get a THING from it. I guess that is definitely the same as child porn, or commercial ads for suppositories-huh?

I didn't post anonymously on writers weekly as I didn't think I was doing anything wrong there. AM doing it here due to the nature of the situation (I'm embarassed about it but thought perhaps fair-minded people on mediabistro might give me a balanced perspective) and becuase we all know there are some pretty sharp-tongued pirhanas just waiting for a juicy tidbit to tear the person who posted it, apart.

My point is, I think most people ARE decent and well meaning and deserve a second chance. I'm surprised that someone like Angela wouldn't consider that. And worse, the note was really obnoxious and harsh. No one should be treated like that. How could you applaud a professional treating a colleague that way?!

It's her board: If she decides to ban you for an inappropriate posting, that's her business. I don't see why you're bringing this to another board, anonymously, begging for sympathy.

I'd suggest you write her and apologize. And I'd strongly suggest you don't use the same self-righteous, everyone-but-me-is-wrong tone that you used in this forum.

I have more respect for Angela now than ever.

Hank: what is your problem?

I took a risk posting here, and I was ready for negative attitudes, but I thought, perhaps, that some would take the higher-ground. This is an issue that really upset me so I took a chance here.

It's funny how some mediabistro posters get pleasure out of being nasty and unproductive, as long as they don't have to identify themselves.

I am assuming that you already know that making unjust statements without any real knowledge to back them up, especially about someone you don't know, is just sport for you. Otherwise, you wouldn't post as you have, without adding your email.

I really posted this to get a read on how others moderate bulletin boards and forums, and whether they felt a first-timer with no ''priors'' should be treated this badly. Sorry you couldn't find anything constructive to say, or offer to give me some pointers, off the board.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

You took a risk, allaboutadvice? By trashing Angela Hoy? Chuck Yeager has nothing on you.

If you have an issue or a problem, then own it and ask for advice. Rational people won't fault that. But don't drag someone else's name in the mud for your mistake.

I see, your problem with me, apparently, is not that I had an issue with writer's weekly, but that I mentioned Angela's name.

But anyone who knows the site know that she is responsible for what happens there. She's a fairly public figure, online and therefore arguably in the public domain.

I should have known better. In all respects. But if you aren't going to address the issue I brought up, please give it a rest, now?

Um, yeah. You thought people would go, ''Oh, you poor mistreated thing!'' And when they didn't you got all snitty.

Yeah, what is with you people? Obviously you have a personal relationship with this Angela person, which means you should stay out of the discussion since you're biased.

I think the original poster was mistreated and Angela should apologize to her, not the other way around. Such treatment appears hasty and unwarranted. If the policy of the board is not to link to other sites, that should have been politely and professionally explained, and that would be the end of it. Looks like it was a shoot first and ask questions later scenario. Seems over the top to summarily ban the person, not to mention verbally assault her for what appears to be an honest mistake, but done for the benefit of others.

I would be just as pissed and might likely also ask others in the biz if this is the norm. But after the responses here, maybe not.
