I'm interested in changing my career path to Fashion Editing. I've read some really good articles on the subject and have even tried working with a local Editor. Nothing has come up for me to do as of yet...
Is it really THAT difficult to break into? I've tried contacting Editors at major publications but haven't heard anything. I can't start as an intern (too much $ responsibility) but wasn't prepared for the challenge; it seems almost impossible to find an EA position. Anyone have applicable advice?

What is your current job?

Really, I think it's all about who you know, and unless you have some kind of related experience or internships, it will be pretty hard. Many places usually won't hire someone as an intern unless you are getting college credit for it (plus, like you said...hard to start as an intern when you have to pay bills).

I am having a similar experience but on the PR side. I was thinking of going into fashion PR, but I don't have any experience with fashion clients. Every job ad I see says MUST have prior experience working with fashion clients or must have contacts at fashion/beauty pubs, etc. I feel like I have no chance of getting these jobs just b/c I had the ''wrong'' internships and my job is with clients that have nothing to do w/ fashion. I've seen the same thing in ads for EA jobs at women's pubs...must have internships at a fashion mag, etc so I'm guessing it's similar.

Others would prob know more about it though since I obviously don't work in the fashion industry :)

And so it goes...
Lady PR: I currently work as a Copywriter but there are a lot of things that are restrictive about the position (I don't use Quark for one...); so, I guess you could say I'm stuck at the bottom of the ladder here too. I'm also limited by location (I live in Florida). I've been trying to find something in NYC for about 6 months now-nothing.
I think you're right about making contacts and working with clients in the biz. I guess I'm just flummoxed about where to begin. I appreciate your comments though. IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!

Hmm...the best thing would prob be to try saving up and moving to NYC (or at least Jersey) and taking temp jobs, freelancing or random jobs until you get a full time position. A lot of companies won't even consider someone out of the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT). A few friends of mine work in nyc and some people will just toss resumes from out of state.

I work in PA, and when i first graduated I was going to move to NYC but obviously wanted a job first. I got a few e-mails asking when I was moving and when I responded by saying I could not relocate until I know I have a position there, I got ''We are only considering local applicants.'' I guess they don't want to bother with waiting for someone to move, etc. There's been some threads on this subject (like using a friend's ny address on your resume) you might want to check out.
