| stella07 | Posted 6/8/2006 2:22:13 PM | show profile i'm considering taking a job at the local newspaper in the town i live in. we're talking a smaaalllll weekly here, that can't possibly have a circ of more than 20,000. my background is metropolitan/national dailies. any ideas of what would be a good salary for a reporter/copy editor? would $40,000 be ok? |
| Hannah | Posted 6/9/2006 8:46:45 AM | show profile Folks here might disagree, but even $40K sounds a little high. Some perspective: I was a reporter/copy editor at a smallish Westchester newspaper six years ago, and I was making $28K. Granted, it was my first real job, but I can't imagine any of the other reporters -- most of whom had two to three years' experience -- were earning much more. |
| Lotus665 | Posted 6/9/2006 9:13:03 AM | show profile It may be a fair salary, but a smaaallll publication probably doesn't have a budget for more than $25K. Ask them their range first or you could price yourself out of a job. |
| Collier | Posted 6/9/2006 9:41:19 AM | show profile if it helps, i work for a weekly with circulation of 10,000. it is my second job out of college (i graduated in 2001), and i make $32,500 with a bonus ($2,500 to $3,000) at the end of the year. i think i make more thany any of the other reporters in the newsroom. at the first small paper at which i worked, i made $18,000 a year. |
| HoboWriter | Posted 6/9/2006 12:08:00 PM | show profile I agree with the other posters that for a small paper, $40,000 is high. I know of people at papers literally five times the size of yours, and they're making $42K. Still, your situation depends on a few things -- would this be your first job (not counting any internships)? If so, you're probably better off dialing down your salary request. But if you've made over 30K at other jobs, then asking for 40 seems more reasonable. Also, you mentioned that it's for a reporter/copy editor job...does that mean you'll be working mostly nights? If so, then yes, I'd say you're entitled to ask for more than a reporter working mostly days. |
| stella07 | Posted 6/9/2006 1:45:22 PM | show profile thanks for your input! most helpful. no, it's not my first job. i was earning $65K at my last full-time poistion. this is a lifestyle change, so i'm not doing it for the money. but at the same time i do not want to work for peanuts ... |
| Collier | Posted 6/10/2006 11:59:03 PM | show profile well, good luck. but most importantly, if this job is going to enhance your quality of life, then less money is probably worth it. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 6/11/2006 1:28:38 AM | show profile As others have said, $40K is probably more than they'll pay. My guess is the range would be $18-32 K, depending on geography or other factors. <> |
| stella07 | Posted 6/13/2006 11:55:09 AM | show profile thanks again. hmmm, $18k - i'd earn more waitressing, and then there's the tips ... |
