anybody here use Bacon's magazine list? I was very impressed with what I glimpsed -- how do you get it and what does it cost?

I used to have access to Bacon's at my old job. It's very good, but also VERY expensive. I think my job was paying $2,000 to $3,000 for ONE user ID. I don't know if they have a less expensive package for everyday folks, but they might. Otherwise, Writer's Market online might be a good bet.

I've used the paper edition available at many public libraries, but the obvious drawback is it's not as up-to-date as the electronic version. The NYPL doesnt seem to have a sub to the database--too pricey.

Individual subscriptions start at around $2500 and go up to $7000+ per year. Your costs will vary depending on whether you're purchasing NA vs International, clip services, etc. but expect to pay a minimum of $2500.

Bacon's
Although, it is an impressive publication, even the latest editions are often outdated as editors come and go, etc.
Have any friends working in a PR firm? Perhaps, you can visit and use their copy and xerox the pages that are of import to you at the present time. Phone numbers and addresses of publications are usually still accurate, but you will just have to call to get a specific editor's name for the pitch you have.

Or, go to the library. Again, the edition may be a year or so out of date, but the other info is very similar. And, even using Bacon's online can cause problems with wrong editor names listed for wrong departments. You are always going to have to dig deeper than using any PR data base.

Overthehill, you should consider splitting the cost with a few other people--that's what I do. And as much as I loathe paying all that money, I would be lost without this service. So many times I've had to get a TV talk show booker's direct phone number at midnight or present a client with a list of the top 25 jewelry trade magazines, ranked by circulation, on a Saturday afternoon---this is not easily done without a subscription service.

Yes, I need to buy into one of these also
I need up to date names and information to pitch stories about plastic surgeons, derms and cosmetic dentists.

What about PR Newswire's product MediaAtlas compared to Bacons?

If it's fabulous I'll fork over the money, but it will be painful. I cannot borrow anyone's; I don't live close enough, and the online version is the most up to date.

Any others that compete with Bacon's--seriously compete?
