| ItsAMysteryNY | Posted 6/14/2006 10:04:12 AM | show profile | email poster Has anyone had any experience pitching to Complete Woman? Or For Me? Could you tell me some info about their turn-around time or who best to pitch for health/travel/ relationship pieces? |
| splishsplash | Posted 6/14/2006 11:27:04 AM | show profile I've pitched Complete Woman a few times. The first time was by e-mail and I never received a response, despite follow-up. So I gave the editor a call and she said they accept snail-mail only, and take about a month or two to respond. Sent a couple ideas (along with clips), but never heard back. I've given up on them. |
| coastalwriter | Posted 6/14/2006 11:13:34 PM | show profile | email poster Complete Woman I contribute to CW from time to time. Usually do beauty, but just did a travel piece. Pitch Tasha Downing. Usually, they send their writers a call for pitches each month and assignments are made within a week or so. Turnaround time for articles is a few weeks. |
| splishsplash | Posted 6/15/2006 3:19:24 AM | show profile SFWriterGurl, what's the best way to pitch? E-mail? Also, can you give any info on payment? Is it fairly decent? ItsAMysteryNY, I totally forgot to respond to your questions about For Me. In my experience, the editors will get back to you within a week or so with a rejection. However, it can take a while to hear back on an acceptance (like months). |

I sent my query/clips about a month ago- via snail mail, so I don't know if it would take even longer in that case (even for a rejection)? Maybe I should think "no news is good news" but is it kosher to pitch this idea to other mags while I wait....and wait....and wait? I might try a couple of things on Complete Woman too- but having to wait and not knowing if I'll hear at all is discouraging. Maybe I'll write, ask for guidelines. Is there an e-mail format for them? |
| splishsplash | Posted 6/15/2006 11:12:30 AM | show profile I lost the e-mail in a computer crash, but I know they never responded to e-mail. When I followed-up by phone the editor said they don't really check e-mail much (huh?) and it's best to send by mail, with clips. Never heard back after that. Maybe things have changed. Might be worth it to call and see what they prefer nowadays. As for For Me, I've did everything via e-mail, so I'm not sure about the response time to snail mail. I'd definitely pitch the idea elsewhere and sell it to the first buyer. That's the way the game goes (at least with me). |
| coastalwriter | Posted 6/15/2006 8:15:25 PM | show profile SplishSplash--I've been working with CW for approx. 2 years and I've never submitted anything via snail mail except for my initial clips, resume and query. Ever since, it's always been via email, and I've always gotten timely responses. Pay is mediocre--about .30/word. I remember getting guidelines at one point, although I don't know where they are now. |
| ItsAMysteryNY | Posted 6/17/2006 10:16:37 AM | show profile I just sent a pitch for a fun travel piece (something cool to explore with your guy type of thing) and clips via snail mail. I included my email address (as well as SASE) so hope that they'll contact me one way or the other. How soon do they usually respond? |
| coastalwriter | Posted 6/17/2006 8:34:26 PM | show profile I don't remember how long it took initially once I sent my clips, resume and query. I remember they gave me my first assignment and then I pitched ideas from there on out. Usually when they have a call for ideas (which happens monthly), they give maybe 3-4 days to submit story ideas and then they are assigned shortly thereafter. That has been my experience. |
