Although I like what I do and who I work with, I have come to the realization that my job is making me absolutely miserable. The long hours, heavy workloads, intense deadlines and low pay are making me crazy. I'm thinking career change, but don't want to go back to school. Any advice on other fields where the skills of an editor/write translate well? Has anyone personally made ths switch? I'd love to hear from you.

Copywriting is a VERY competitive field but often pays more than (book and magazine) editing. Getting your foot in the door is 3/4 of the trouble. I'm actually thinking of making a switch from editing to copywriting, and I'm barely in field one...

(the low pay is an issue even for us youngins)

I used to do magazine work. I seguewayed into freelance magazine work and then freelance copywriting, mostly technology topics. This isn't for everyone, since not everyone likes or can write about technology. But I can work about 15 hours a week and make as much or more than most magazine/newspaper staff people working full-time, leaving me free to pursue other things of interest. If I want to make more, I simply seek out more work. If you have any writing talent, and are willing to develop business and marketing skills, and pursue it aggressively full-time, it's not all that hard to pull down $100K a year through freelance copyrighting.

dribbledrive, do you live in New York? And do you ever have to do any driving? (I'm interested in copywriting if my other ambitions don't pan out, and maybe even if they do, but I hope to live in New York and not do any travel unless it's by bus, train, plane or taxi.)

dumb question
But what IS copywriting? Is that writing copy for ads? What all is involved in it? I was thinking PR or marketing, because those fields pay more and are similar, and I am interested in the business end of things.

Copywriting can include writing brochures, press releases, website profiles, the scripts for TV commercials, the words you see on billboards... generally, it's writing to promote a business, product or person.

I live in Los Angeles. I work with clients all over the country, but virtually all of my interaction with them is over the phone. I have worked for some clients for years without ever physically meeting them. It's all conference calls and emails.

In addition to all that, I've been hired to ghostwrite corporate blogs, write online videos, advertorials, and white papers. Some of the projects are largely informational, but all have a slant based on what the client is trying to accomplish.

copy writing courses
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good copy writing course? I have previously taken classes in college but would like to brush up on my skills. Specifically writing for public relations and online marketing.

Thank you.

Any advice on where to find copywriting work? Do you just approach businesses and inquire about any need they might have? I too am experienced in the editorial side of things and am thinking about making a change...
