I saw this company advertise for reporter positions on Hot Jobs. Has anyone heard of them They claim to be an up and coming online news source and they are looking to hire reporters but I am a bit skeptical because I have heard that there are those out there that place such ads looking for information from applicants. Let me know what you all think about this or if you have heard of them before. Thanks!

got me
They just sent me an e-mail advertising the jobs they are trying to fill....never heard of them before either. They are registered under WebDesigners -- a hidden name no doubt. Proceed with caution.

BIG caution
Ok...i just 'clicked' their e-mail link to see what happens. It takes you to a form, which appears to be leading you into a job application forum. But... after you fill out your name and address and e-mail and hit 'continue' guess what? It returns "thank you for applying. We'll contact you in 1-3 days." And yet all they have is my contact info not my CV.

Why don't you just google "usavoice.org"?
seriously, check out the second hit

Oh Dear God...
I can only hope that they hire copy editors, too. For those who DID check out their website, I think they meant AUTONOMY in paragraph two, not anonymity. Then again, maybe they really do want to be anonymous.

I can only wonder what they're paying!

more than just google
I'm action oriented, not interested in creating assumptions.

So, here is 'their' response to the silly application link I clicked... please note, I did not apply "for editor" position, nor did I replace their [state] - it came in that way:

"Dear Jeff,

I have received your online application for the Editor position that you completed on Thursday, Jun 29, 2006, at 11:58 AM. USA Voice is poised to become the largest news network in the world by providing local news from local reporters.

Our reporters must be a part of the community that they cover, not working from an ivory tower. I feel that you may be qualified for our opening as a reporter in [state]. I would like to receive some additional information from you before making a final decision Please log into our website www.usavoice.org using the following
username and password:

Username: (deleted )
Password: (deleted)

Once you have logged in please complete the application. I will respond to your completed application within 1 - 3 business days.

We are delighted that you are interested in joining our organization and I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Warm Regards
Kyle Stone"

Interesting anyway. The good part about using a Yahoo! ID is the spam feature should at some future time I realize they used my ID for that purpose.

who is kyle stone?
a porn star according to the Dutch site AND google. The scammers have a sense of humor anyway.
it's amazing how many questions asked on this board could be answered by simply googling.

subtle hint
Life is more than google...such was in my subtle hint in the message above, but now I state it straightaway. I went through that exercise and posted that response to create the record...ideally it helps the original poster with his/her question. Google, btw, did not respond to his/her question.

I received the same e-mail
I received the same e-mail earlier today. Unfortunately, I completed the second application step. The second step had you confirm your contact information. In addition, it asked you to choose a work location, part-time/full-time, an area to report on, as well as asking why you think you would be a good reporter. It also requested your educational background. Similiar to the first application, it asked if you would be interested in furthering yoru education and ended by directing you to online degree programs. Since then, I've been googling and it appears to be a scam.

Think about it, it's poised to be one of the largest news organizations in the world. However, we have heard nothing about it and know very little. I've studied Communications for six years. The media utilize other media in order to promote themselves. If it's suppose to be the next "BIG" thing, why hasn't it receieved news coverage? Why hasn't it been in the papers? In addition, it launces tomorrow (the Fourth of July). As of now, the Web site is incomplete, provides little information and contains no contact information. Not to mention there are thousands of jobs that need to be filled worldwide.

Also, they've targeted entry-level/college graduates (such as myself) who are gullible and most liley to apply for this "dream job." This is clear as the Yahoo Hot Job posting reads, "While each reporter is selected on his or her own merit, USA voice is seeking fresh and edgy voices, not reporters who have been through the "establishment" news organizations." They're poised to be the largest news organization in the world and compare their organization to that of CNN. However, they're targeting "entry-level" applicants. I doubt there are too many recent college grads qualified to work within such a "great' news organization.

I've pasted the e-mail below.......you will recognize it from the post above. We shoudl continue to research and communicate any new information we might discover. Tomorrow's launching should be interesting....

As promised by a site mentioned in a previous post, Kyle Stone is a porn star -- a quite famous one.

usavoice.org
I, too, was going through my hotjobs account and saw usavoice.org and yesterday I filled out the 'application' and got a msg this morning from a kyle stone...wait, I am getting a msg hit and this may be him. Nope, sorry. Anyway, he was telling me how he liked the application and mentioned the ivory tower junk, etc. when I did the username and password, I got a web page error and a note about filtering the cookies on this page. So it has to be fake. I sent another msg to this stone guy, asking if he is an affiliate of USA Today to see if I get a reply. If I don't I am going to complain to Hot Jobs about this and them allowing this to be on their job list with out thoroughly checking out the background.

Google'd USAVoice
Google'd it and came up with at least a few pages of usavoice. "anything".. meaning usavoice.org, .news, .sports, announcements, entertainment...Etc..........

Got the email from Jobs.com Definitely plan to contact them.

Could this be a hoax or the beginning of identity theft??

Reminds me of the email I rec'd from some "European" oil company that said it wanted an American associate who could transfer monies from American funds to South African funds and you got to keep 30% of $..only problem was they wanted your SS# on the application along with all other pertinent info...............

Please tell me that you dont give your REAL contact info when you are not sure who you are sending it to. I always use a a fake name and a free email account just for feeling out these questionable job sites.
flipflap Posted – 7/12/2006 6:03:20 PM | show profile
When you're checking out a questionable potential employer (or anyone else), you can probably save yourself a lot of time and effort by googling "name of co." and "scam."
If you do this with "usavoice.org" and "scam," there's almost 40 hits, including this mediabistro thread as well as the Dutch website mentioned in a previous post, which was the no. 2 hit that I referred to in my first post: http://www.klaasdevriesjr.nl/k-files/talentrock/usa_voice_usavoice_org.htm

What you can do
I fell for the scam as well and contacted the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).

I would recommend filing a report on the the company.
The FTC representative that I talked to said that based on the information that I had given the company that it probably wasn't possible that they would be able to steal my identity or get a hold of my credit card numbers.

Trans Union offers some advice as well on their web site http://www.transunion.com.

I will just have to be me more careful in the future.

usavoice
I filled out the intial application to see what came back, and nothing has. If it's a scam I can't see how it's working since my name, address and telephone number are in the public domain already, and who knows how many people I've communicated to via e-mail, so my web address is out there too. Wouldn't identity theft require more information? If not, surely no one is immune.

I just completed the phone interview. Sounded somewhat suspicious; made me wonder if USAVoice is just going to spam e-mail addresses and discussion boards with poorly-written "news" articles.

Now that they have my cell phone number and personal data from the application, I wonder if I should be contacting someone. Advice?
jaymolloy23 Posted – 8/9/2006 6:40:08 PM | show profile
what did they say on the phone interview?

People, PLEASE!!
This is NOT standard practice in any way, shape, or form, for a reporting job or any other for that matter. Why are you persisting in pursuing this? You're wasting your time. You're better than this, people...stop already!

The whole thing sounds too, too, too weird.

Lotus, I doubt these posters are real people. Call me a skeptic, but I find the the last 4 posts (before Lotus's) really unbelievable. It struck me as odd they all use first-last name format, all are first time posters. Perhaps the scammers are trying to gain back some credibility? because
if you google "usavoice.org" and "scam" this bread is the third hit.
flipflap Posted – 8/9/2006 10:09:50 PM | show profile
oops.. not bread, thread....
it's been a long day
