I'm new to this genre and want to clarify: when a publication says they take "personal essays," is this essentially the same as a short memoir? I read on another forum elsewhere that personal essays were more journalistic, but I'm uncertain about the distinction.

Does anyone have some favorite markets for this type of piece? And, do you have any recommendations for resources on perfecting the form (i.e. recommended collections to read, websites or how-to books, etc.)?

Thanks!

Personal essays do not have to be journalistic. Want to
learn the form? Take classes with good teachers. Develop
your voice, get feedback on your pieces before you submit, rewrite. Study the markets, and target the right places.
Phillip Lopate offers good advice on this genre.

I've written a few personal essays and they don't have to be journalistic. They can be about a major event in your life, a life lesson you've learned, etc. The main thing is crisp, compelling writing...something I'm still learning.
