Hello Colleagues,

I am desperately in need of salary direction for a communications and marketing director position at a major arts/community center in NYC. The responsibilities are tremendous: Aside from typical marketing dir stuff, there's pr and outreach work. Since it's non-profit, how much should I ask for? I was thinking in the range of $55,000-$60,000.

Thanks in advance

It depends in part on how much experience they want. I'd aim higher myself; perhaps $70-75 and see what they say. It never hurts.

Anytime you're negotiating salary, try to always find out how much the company is thinking of paying. They will always ask you first, but you can turn it right back and ask them in a nice way. That way, you won't potentially short yourself out of money, but you won't price yourself out immediately if you're willing to negotiate, either.

Thanks Cyrus! They're asking for five years experience. How would you suggest I ask the question? Is email appropriate? (I haven't sent my resume packet yet).

I've been researching this myself. The data is from 2005, but it should give you a general idea.

good luck!

Definitely do it by phone and politely ask them to state their range and then don't respond until they say something like "Is that OK?" I once had an editor climb from $60k to $90k in about 15 seconds while I bit my tongue. This technique works! If it's way too low you can say, "sorry" but it may be higher than you think. Nonprofits vary very widely.

I definitely think you should ask for more. I'm a writer for a major museum in Boston (not a grant writer, but in communications), I'm not even a director, and I earn in the mid-50s. I hope you ask for more.

Just curious ly, you said you were a communications writer for a museum. What exactly does that entail? What is an average weeks work for you and for someone who is in newspapers/mags how do you even get into the "museum loop" ? thanks in advance
