There is no info on payment in their writer's guidelines. I know they used to be a paying pub, but I wonder if that is still the case..Anyone written for them lately?

Yes, they pay. I write for them pretty regularly and I love it. It takes a while to get the checks sometimes, but they pay you. They will quote you a price on the article after the pitch is accepted or when you get the assignment.

Thanks for the update. Is there room for negotiation on the price?

I am not sure. I haven't tried. But its a good pub and the eds are great. Good luck!

Notorious deadbeats...
Both MB and Writers Weekly have extensive posts on this publication. They have a history of nonpayment, unprofessionalism, and runaround. Obvously, some people are happy (though even that poster said it can take a while to get paid). But do you want to risk it?

ubitiq- did you ever find out the answer?
I just noticed that dragonfire posted an ad on MB.
http://www.mediabistro.com/joblistings/jobview.asp?joid=41649&page=1

A very long ad touting awards they've won. Not a word on payment. Why the heck not? Anybody else noticed that when a so-called "job" ad for freelancers omits that info, the payment is little or nothing?

Interestingly, journalismjobs. com now lists "freelance opportunities" under a separate heading. It's not in the "jobs" section anymore, which is very appropriate since the "payment" for many of these opportunities is again, little or nothing.

I have always been paid and they state in their contract that it will take a while for your payment to be processed. And their pay, while not on the high end, isn't on the low-end either and is very fair. Also, if you look at the writers weekly thing, all those writers who claimed they didn't get paid got their pay and their claims resolved.

why not just tell us how much they pay? I'm just curious. Because it seems some pubs will post really long ads mentioning everything under the sun EXCEPT payment. Like it's a secret. Or it doesn't matter. it's annoying for writers who dont want to waste their time querying

midwest, just tell us how much they pay you for what type of story, and how long you had to wait (that means $$$, # of words, type of story and weeks, months, etc., you waited for the check).

This site is supposed to be for writers, editors, etc., to help each other with current info. instead, you're playing it just about as cute as the drangofire postings do. are you sure you're not an editor there blowing us some smoke?

Seriously, if you don't want to write for them don't. If you want me to give detailed info, just ask. I don't check this board daily so have some patience. There is no need to be abrasive (looking at you bjoconnorfla).

I am not an editor, although if I lived in PA I would give it a shot.

They pay on a per article basis. I did two short 100-300word interiviews and recieved $50. Got that payment in 2 months. I did two other articles for 500 words and recieved $100 each and got one payment in 3 months (which is the longest time, stated in their contract) and the other payment I recieved in a month and a half. I enjoy writing for them. The editors have always answered my questions and have helped me with pitches etc. I will continue to write for them.

That was my experience. However, I encourage you all to write and ask them yourselves. If you want more info email me off board.

I was paid around $300-350 I believe and I didn't have to wait.

BUT...I had a real hard time with the editors - they did a poor job of editing/fact checking/proof reading. I think other than the main editors, the staff are all students.

If you need the money or are starting out, I guess it could be a good publication. But I found the staff to be a headache.

still unprofessional
While the complaining writers on Writers Weekly may have eventually gotten their money, it took MONTHS, and multiple letters to multiple people involved in the publication, all the way up to the executives of the school itself and finally its lawyers. That's pathetic. I once submitted a story to them, but thank goodness it got rejected. I will NEVER submit anything to them. Too many people have gotten screwed, and frankly, their own responses reveal just how little they care. They lied, blatantly and repeatedly. You can read it all in their own words and decide for yourself.

thanks for posting the info, Midwest.
I don't know about anyone else, but I like to have some idea of a magazine's rates before querying. If the rates are too low for me, I won't bother. I don't understand why all of the pubs that post ads don't just mention (some do). It would save the editors a lot of time and cut out unnecessary correspondence!
